Celebrating Bubble Bath Day

Did you know that 8th January was bubble bath day? I didn’t until I was looking through the PawPrint Badges calendar and spotted it on there. We are working towards a couple of badges at the moment and it sounded like a fun day to mark, and could count towards our STEM badge.

I decided I’d run this as a zoom session as we are in a lockdown here in the UK right now, but it would be a fun one to run as a face to face group session too.

The Plan for the Session

My plan for the session was to talk to the children about how relatively recently hot running water was made available in homes and to cover briefly the history of cleanliness. I didn’t want to do this too in-depth as it’s not that much fun to be talked at over zoom. But this would be much more fun to do in a group and you could use props to cover some of the information.

We talked about the need for good hygiene and how this has been a particularly key public health message this past year in terms of handwashing.

My friend then talked us through making our own bath bombs.

What you Need

Making your own bath bombs is surprisingly easy and you only need a few key supplies:

• Small moulds – I used an ice cube tray for this and it worked really well
• Citric Acid (200g is enough)
• Bicarbonate of Soda (400g)
• Essential Oil – we used Mandarin oil.

My lovely friend talked the children through mixing the ingredients together and making sure they were just right and ready to pop into the moulds.

Wrapping Up

To end the session I got the children to think about what their ideal bubble bath would be – anything as wacky as they wanted.

We have pizza baths, chocolate baths, Harry Kane(!) batths, marshmallow baths and many more. After the session my three drew out their bath bomb designs thinking about the shape of the bath bombs, the colour and scent.

This was a really fun day to mark and the children loved watching their bath bomb in the bath before bedtime. You could also extend it by adding differnt ingredients and colours to the bath bombs and seeing how that changes their composition.
