A few weeks ago it was World Book Day and we had a really fun day. We did a few bits and pieces in the lead up to the day but on the day itself, we had a Charlie and The Chocolate Factory Themed day.
Here I am sharing some ideas of things that we did that you could also recreate at home for your own Charlie and The Chocolate Factory Themed day.
Enter the Chocolate Factory
Of course, you need to make your own chocolate bars! I got some bars of chocolate and covered them in a Wonka wrapper. Inside I had made an invitation for the children to make their very own Wonka Bars. We melted the chocolate and poured it into some silicon moulds and added all manner of sweets and sprinkles. We then popped them into the fridge to set and enjoyed them later that day.
We then moved on to making some lickable wallpaper. We did this with a sheet of rice paper each and lots of sweets!
The Characters
We then looked at doing something to represent each of the children in the book.
- Augustus Gloop – For Augustus we melted chocolate and dipped fruit in to represent the chocolate river he fell into. A chocolate fountain would work well for this
- Veruca Salt – in the story Veruca is confronted with the squirrels but for this, we used the film version of good and bad eggs. We painted some ceramic eggs
- Violet Beauregarde – Violet chews gum so we had planned to make some bubblegum scented bath bombs. We did however have an issue with the bubblegum scented oil (it got lost in the post) so we haven’t yet done this one.
- Mike TeeVee – Mike famously shrinks to fit inside the TV so we made some shrinking Keyrings.
Other Bits & Pieces
We talked about our favourite parts of the story and how the film version differs from the book. We talked about Charlie and what we can learn from the story and enjoyed the chocolate bars that we had made. It was a super fun day and a great way to earn the 2021 World Book Day Badge.
