If you’re a follower of my Facebook page, then you might have spotted that we have recently set up a family board game championship. Each evening, after dinner, we play a game together. It’s a nice way for us all to be present and in the moment and to enjoy some time together.
One of the games that Daniel chose was the Match a Mummy card game. We were recently sent this to review hence the ad tag at the start of this post. My full disclosure policy can be found here.
About the game
So the Match a Mummy game is made with the usual high standards you’d expect from Laurence King and this has been created alongside the British Museum. There are 20 pairs to match up in this game and I’ve already learnt so much about the Egyptians since playing this!
The cards are beautifully designed and you need to match up the two cards, so, for example, the Nile and the boat, the sphinx and the pyramid. There’s an accompanying book that explains the two pairs which help to teach you all about the fascinating world of the Egyptians.
How we played
The first time the children and I played this I was amazed at how much Daniel knew about the Egyptians. It’s not a topic we have studied yet; we have focussed more on British history for now, but he knew so much about all the different things. He told me has gleaned all this from his horrible histories book. He has been eagerly telling us all about the different customs and gods as we have played this game.
For our family games championships, we had two points up for grabs. The first point went to the player who amassed the most pairs. Upon making a pair if the player could tell the rest of us what the two items signified they got a bonus point; if they couldn’t it was passed to other players to tell us. Suffice to say, Daniel did amazingly at this bit!
We really enjoyed this game and it’s a really fun way to introduce a new topic or to consolidate knowledge. I suspect we will be undertaking an Egyptians topic earlier than I had anticipated!
