Would you rather

Would you rather….?

If your children are anything like mine, then they’ll be endlessly fascinated with bugs and the such. The book Would You Rather: Dine with a Dung Beetle or Lunch with a Maggot? is perfect for inquisitive pre-schoolers who are thirsting to learn about the creatures sharing their world with them.

Would you rather

The book is written by Camilla de le Bedoyere (and Mel Howells) and we already love Camilla’s flash cards so I was sure Mr D would like this book. I wasn’t wrong.

The book poses a series of questions to the reader about which bug they’d rather do to something with. Mr D, predictably, when asked what he’d rather live with chose the snail!

The book, across a double page spread, asks the reader who’d they’d rather eat with, live with etc. The following page then tells you what that would entail, the snail example is shown below.

There are lots of snippets of information about each of the bugs, and at the end of the book it gives the bug awards for the deadliest big, bossiest, smartest etc.

The vine below shows some more of the inside of the book.

It really is a gem and one that I think we will look at in much more detail when we learn about mini beasts in more detail next spring. What I really like about this book (and many of the QED books) is that there is a page of follow on activities to help extend the learning. These are really useful and helpful tips on how to encourage your child’s interest and it’s something we will be looking at when we focus more specifically on mini beasts early next year.

There is a second book in this series (Would you rather have a shark for a sister or a ray for a brother?) and two more due to be published soon. These are sure to be brilliant books for exploring the natural world and understanding why creatures have the traits and skills that they do.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for a review. All words, opinions and images in this blog post are my own.

  1. Looks like a great book! I had a book called ‘Would you rather’ as a child which I LOVED. These books look to have more of a theme (my childhood one was just random choices eg. ‘would you rather jump in the nettles for £5, swallow a dead frog for £20 or spend all night in a haunted castle for £50?!) and help kids learn about things too – all the better! #readwithme
