We did a lovely Everest study a few weeks ago (well probably a couple of months now!) and we had some fabulous books to support this topic. I thought it might be useful to share the books we enjoyed here, for others that are studying a similar topic.
Everest Specific Books
Our study focussed on The Himalayas and Everest in particular and I did buy a few books that were specific to this topic. We used Everest: The Remarkable Story of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. This is an absolutely brilliant book, packed full of information about the two men, the team that supported them, and of course, all about Everest itself. There are some images from the book in this post on Instagram.
We also enjoyed reading Everest which is wonderfully produced by the team at Flying Eye Books. It is split into five sections covering the mountain, climbing the mountain and then a section about the top of the mountain. It covers a lot including myths such as the Yeti and ethical considerations such as the volume of rubbish being left on Everest.
General Mountain Books
In addition to the two specific Everest books, we also had some other general mountain books to hand. These covered lots of different mountains and were a useful addition to the work we were doing.
Mountain is a great book packed full of information about different mountain ranges. It covers how mountains are studied and the information is presented well and in an engaging way for children.
World of Wonder Mountains is a captivating book that again looks at lots of different mountain ranges. It explores how mountains are formed, the nature that survives and thrives there as well as unique things such as the rainbow rocks found in China. It is beautifully illustrated and packed full of information.
Mountains of the World is another from Flying Eye and contains an amazing level of information. It’s packed with details on mountains around the world and those that seek to summit them. There’s information on different types of climbers, the equipment needed to climb, and the animals they might encounter. There is plenty of information about the wildlife that can be found and all are illustrated with Dieter Braun’s own unique style.
My final recommendation is a book we have had for a while and is called Secrets of the Moutain. It’s absolutely beautifully done and introduces the many creatures that are hiding in mountains. It’s a lovely read to share for this topic.
