As I wrote in my February plan, I had planned a Vikings study with the children, however for one reason and another that didn’t happen and I switched our history topic to the Stone Age.
I had, however, gathered up some brilliant books to support a Viking topic so I thought it was worth sharing here; I plan to revisit the Vikings soon with the children so it will be a reminder for me too!
Chapter Books
I was lucky enough to be sent some chapter books for the children to read that had a Viking theme. D really enjoys the Horrible Histories books so the two Viking Tales books by Terry Deary were very well enjoyed by him. They’re a fun read and weave in bits of information too to support learning about Vikings. The same for Attack of the Vikings by Tony Bradman – this was well received by D and I think when we do come to our Viking study I’ll read these aloud to the children.

Another absolute hit with D was So You Want To Be a Viking?. After he had read this he recounted it all to me during one of our evening walks. He absolutely loved this book and it’s written well with lots of great snippets of information that really stuck in Daniel’s mind.

General Information Books
One of the books that I had planned a bit of the topic around was the fab The Vikings are Coming! which is part of the Invaders and Raiders series of books. It’s a brilliant book with stacks of information. It covers a lot about how the Vikings invaded and conquered many parts of Britain with information about their longships and the fighting style. There is information about how Vikings lived and this helps to build a picture of what Viking life was like, as well as ending with their legacy that can be seen in Britain today. It’s a brilliant book (in fact we love the whole series!).
Finally, Viking Voyagers is a beautiful book – it’s a large book but packed full of information about the Vikings as well as being exquisitely illustrated. It’s utterly captivating. There is an awful lot packed into the book and it’s done so in a way that really draws young readers in. I really like this book as do the children and it’s one they read independently a lot.
