From when we are very young to when we get very old, there is no denying the importance of a nurturing family. Evidence shows that the relationships between seniors and their family equates to a much better quality of life.
Here are some of the main reasons why.
Family and health
When it comes to maintaining a good quality of life, staying connected to friends and family is one of the biggest concerns for older people. Relationships are more important than financial resources and comfort.
However, the significance of family is much deeper than simple preference. There is a big connection between health and strong family connections.
Elders who are more socially involved in the family are more likely to be able to live longer than those who stay isolated. This is even the case for those elders who suffer from degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
They will also have a stronger immune system which is increasingly important in elders due to becoming more susceptible to catching viruses as they get older.
Improved mental and brain health
Close family bonds often mean better mental health, no matter the age. Having a close-knit group of people you can interact with means they are more likely to feel wanted and needed, which impacts positively on their mental health.
It also helps to boost their cognitive function. Happy elders are more likely to be a part of a happy and healthy family. They will spend more time recalling stories of the past which helps them to be able to increase their memory and thinking skills.
They get the family support they need
Throughout life, it’s natural to notice a shift in the family dynamics. This means that any support given and received is likely to evolve throughout your time.
One of the more drastic changes that take place is the relationship between a parent and their children. When children are small the parents take care of them as everybody gets older the roles are likely to reverse and they need to take care of their basic needs to be met.
Similarly, when a senior experience is a health decline, they may need financial support from their children. Being able to provide some of this financial support can alleviate some stress that an elder may experience. It’s commonly known that stress weakens the immune system and can cause illnesses. So, therefore, having the necessary financial support from family to make a major difference in their overall health being able to provide some of this financial support can alleviate some stress that an elder may experience.
Emotional Support
You may not be able to provide all of that necessary care in a practical sense for your parents. And it’s important to see your options around that. However emotional support from a loved one does wonders for an ageing person. Being a listening ear well they talk about their life is positive for their contentment. As well as being able to do simple tasks like doing their grocery shops or doing some light cleaning.
