We have recently completed an Ancient Greece study and, as ever, we used plenty of books to support this topic. I thought I would share the ones we found useful here. Some of these books were sent to me, and all links are affiliate links. You can read more about my disclosure policy here.
To help to structure our topic I used the CGP Ancient Greeks Book and supplemented it with Youtube Videos, museum information as well as the books included in this post.
General Books about The Ancient Greeks
Meet the Ancient Greeks was probably our most used book and it presents the information in a fabulously fun and engaging way and I am going to be adding the others in this series to our collection as we get to those topics. It’s bright and engaging and we really liked this one a lot.

So you think you’ve got it bad, Ancient Greece is part of a series my eldest loves. He has learnt SO much from this series and I really can’t speak highly enough about it. It compares life now to the time of the Ancient Greeks with suitable levels of gore for children to enjoy!
Finally, the Greek and Coming is part of the invaders and raiders series and was a great book for us when looking at the warfare side of Ancient Greek and how city states protected themselves.
Books about Greek Myths and Legends
The children really enjoyed learning about the myths and legends of Ancient Greece and the Greek Gods & Heroes book was a particularly popular one. Each God has his/her own page with lots of facts and information about them. D used this book to make his own Top Trumps cards.
Myth Atlas is a particularly beautiful book and one we have used a few times over the years when looking at different myths. The section on the Greek Gods is good as it help to piece together the family tree.
Fianlly,Athena: The Story of a Goddess is a superb book dedicated to the Goddess Athena – we really liked this one a lot and was a great book to kick start the myths and legends part of our study.

- The Odyssey All Action Classics
The chapter books we have read for this study have been brilliant. Both Who Lets the Gods Out and Percy Jackson was recommended to me by Mr. Payne Reads and both my older two absolutely LOVED these series. I have started Who Let The Gods Out and can see why they’re such a hit. The author, Maz Evans, does an excellent job of weaving historical fact into the books and Em read this series in about ten days. D read the Percy Jackson series in about two weeks and they’ve now swapped over to read the others.

The Ancient Greek Mysteries series was well received by them both, and again the use of historical fact weaved into the story was great and it helped them to embed some of the things they have learned. I’m looking forward to reading this series with them again soon.
Finally, the Odyssey (part of the All Action Classics series) is a great graphic novel that brings Homer’s ideas and writings to a younger audience in a really accessible way
