If you follow me on twitter, you might have spotted me tweeting about our USA Postcard Project (search #USAPostcardProject over there to see all my posts).
The children’s most recent speaking and listening project was about the USA and I thought it might a fun idea to try and get a postcard from each of the 50 states. I wanted the children to have an appreciation of just how vast the USA is, and of course how different the states are.
I put out a tweet on twitter asking people if they would be willing to send us a postcard from their home state. Within a few hours I had many promises of postcards to come.
The first of the postcards took around 10 days to arrive and over the last four-five weeks we have had lots of cards arrive, and some 25 states have been represented!
The first card to arrive was from Delaware which we thought was quite fitting as we learnt that Delaware was the first state admitted to the union! We marked the states off on a map as they arrived and the children completed state fact files for each one.
As more arrived we learnt all sorts of exciting things as well as enjoying seeing the different style of cards to arrive. Daniel opted to focus his project on Texas, H on Alaska and Em on Washington DC.
We still have a few more postcards that are on their way to us, and I plan to come back to this project with them again soon when we map the postcards a bit more.
We were very fortunate to be sent a huge box of goodies from a lady in Alaska – I suspect this was the reason for H deciding he wanted to focus his project on Alaska! We were very touched and very grateful for all the amazing things we were sent!
This has been a fun project to undertake, and there are still some cards that are on their way to us so I think we will continue this on in some form. It’s been interesting to look at the different state birds, flowers and mottos and to see which state joined the union and when. It’s also been wonderful to see the genrosity of people who happily sent cards with facts and information and followed the progress on twitter! Thank you to all who took part
