This week’s book of the week is the fabulous A Stone Sat Still by Brendan Wenzel. We have had this a little while now and every time I come back to read it with the children I fall in love with it a little bit more. It’s a fabulous book and there are so many different angles from which it can be explored.
I was sent a copy of this book by the publisher, and for this reason, this post is marked as an ‘ad’. My full disclosure policy can be found here.
About A Stone Sat Still
This book is simple in its about a stone. Located in one spot. It is simply a stone. Or is it? The story begins with the stone. Being a stone and sitting, still, in the grass and the dirt.
As the reader turns each page we see that the stone is more than a simple stone. It is many many things, often complete opposites. The stone is loud and it is quiet. It is rough and smooth. It is a pebble and a hill. It is anything and everything. But still just a stone.
What we loved
What I love about this book is that it teaches children about perspective, and what one thing might be to one person is something different to someone else. It’s a fabulous and really vivid lesson in perspective and perception, as well as considering how the use of our different senses changes what the stone is.
There’s a lovely subtle environmental message in this book too and each time I have read it I have been captivated by its simplicity and beauty.
Illustration
The illustrations in this book are wonderful; the colours of muted where they need to be and bright and vivid elsewhere. Each of the animals that interact with the stone is full of character and fun details. It’s cleverly illustrated and I love how the stone is central to each of the pictures, but without being obviously so.
A Stone Sat Still is beautifully illustrated and masterful despite the simplicity of the idea a simple stone.
