We were recently sent a bundle of games from the team at Gibsons Games to try out and review, and one that we have all enjoyed it Pass the Bomb. This new version is a bigger game and comes in a brightly coloured box. It’s great fun and whilst it’s suggested age is 8+ Em at 6 managed it fine (and H joined my team to help me)
What’s in the box?
So, the game comes with plenty of bits and pieces. There is the red time-bomb which serves as an electronic timer, 165 cards, four printed puzzle tiles, the game board, eight wooden playing pieces, one cup, one wooden ball and one special die.
Note that the time-bomb requires two AAA batteries (these aren’t included) There is an on/off button and there is only one button to activate the timer.
The game is for 2-8 players.
Playing the Game
The aim of the game is to be the first player to move your game piece around the board, furthest away from the explosion at the centre. Movement around the board is achieved by completing a number of tasks before the bomb detonates!
To play the game cards must be sorted into the relevant piles and placed to one side of the board with the cup, puzzle pieces and timebomb placed to the other.
The player rolls the die to find out what task they need to complete, they trigger the time-bomb and attempt to complete the task before passing to the next player, continuing until the time-bomb detonates. It can detonate after 10 seconds or one minute.
The challenges
There are five different challenges to complete, the puzzle one is what seems to be a simple puzzle which needs to be put together – this is surprisingly difficult under time pressure! The bounce one with the cup and ball is good fun, and we seem to either do really well or really struggle with this one! The others are word challenges. Rhyme Artist tests your rhyming ability, word acrobat prompts you to think about words containing the letters on the cards and category captain challenges you to think of things within a given category.
What did we think?
I really liked this game as it really gets you thinking, and the children loved it when the time-bomb detonated on Damian and I. There’s definitely an added pressure and it’s amazing how quickly your mind can go blank, especially with some of the spelling games. It’s a great game to play with children and it didn’t take too long to complete the game. It’s one I am sure will be played a few times and it’s great fun for a games afternoon.
