I was contacted by Tales by Mail to see if I would like to review their box. We received the box and this is our review. I haven’t received additional payment and the code at the bottom is not an affiliate code.
What is Tales by Mail
Tales by Mail is a bi-monthly book subscription service aimed at 8-12 year olds. Each box is themed (we received Historical Heroes) and has an accompanying podcast which is released a few weeks after the box arrives. The box includes signed bookplates, bookmarks, activity sheets, and a letter from the authors of the books.
The Books we Received
We received the Historical Heroes box and the books were Darwin’s Dragons and The Queens Fool. Darwin’s Dragons I had seen on Instagram a few times and was on my wishlist, but I hadn’t heard of the Queens’ Fool. I was impressed with the books that arrived and I liked how the box was themed.
What the Children Thought
My children are really lucky in that we receive a lot of books in the post. Daniel really likes history and I thought this particular box would really appeal to him. He straight away picked up Darwin’s Dragons and it is one that I am planning to do a wider study with over the next few months. I was impressed with the quality of the books and also the topics of the books. I liked that they were books that you wouldn’t really see in a supermarket or the such and for that reason I think the box makes a brilliant gift. Even amongst our very generous bookcases, we didn’t have either of those books nor looking back over past boxes do we have the previous books.
The children dived straight into the books and then we looked at the other bits and pieces together. They enjoyed the letters from the authors and the badges that were included and I certainly kept them busy for a few days reading both books and looking at the enclosed sheets.
What I Thought
I thought for the age range it’s probably the best book subscription box I’ve received. The books themselves are excellent and the accompanying letters and bookplates are nice to add in as well. I like the themed element of the box as it means that we could link into a study or similar that we are doing. The podcast that accompanies the box is a great idea too and I look forward to listening to that with the children one afternoon.
The quality of the items inside was really good too; all useful things that will last, rather than something that will end up in a box of plastic things somewhere.
