Everyone wants the best for their family, and after the challenges we’ve all faced since 2020, health is a priority more than ever. But how do you put health at the top of your priority list for everyone in your home? The answer is with small and manageable habits that will have a positive effect and set your family up for a healthier 2022 and beyond.

Limit screen time

Over the past couple of years, with remote working and attending classes over Zoom, our screen time has increased considerably. But it has a negative impact on our ability to focus and to stay productive, particularly for kids. Don’t let screens dominate your, or your children’s, days. You need quality time as a family, so schedule time every day to put the screens and phones away and do something as a family, whether that’s going for a walk, playing a board game or cooking a meal together.

Create nourishing meals

Our eating habits can quickly become disrupted as a result of stress, boredom or changes to our routines. But unhealthy food choices don’t just affect our weight – they can also lead to deficiencies and a struggling immune system. For your family, focus on preparing meals that provide a wide range of nutrients every day, prioritising fresh whole foods rather than packaged meals where possible. Desserts and snacks are fine, when they’re eaten in moderation rather than a replacement for a proper meal. Planning meals in advance can help you and your family to stay on track instead of reaching for the takeout menus, and it can be a fun way to try new recipes together.

Prioritise mental health

Since the start of the pandemic, stress has been high for people of all ages. Not being able to see friends and relatives, or enjoy our usual hobbies, has taken its toll on our happiness and stress levels. When coupled with the usual challenges of family life, it’s no wonder that our mental health has suffered, including that of your child’s wellbeing and health. In 2022, make mental health the focus by attending therapy as a family. A counsellor can help you and your family navigate goals, emotions and more in a healthy way.

Get quality rest

Are you, your partner or your children in the habit of scrolling on your phones in bed, or working late at night before logging off and immediately trying to sleep? It’s a routine that can be familiar to many of us, but it can have a negative impact on your ability to get a good night’s rest. Good sleep hygiene is important, so make sure you’re all switching off devices at least a couple of hours before bed, heading in at a reasonable hour and setting up bedrooms to be conducive to proper rest – meaning black-out curtains, a quiet environment and a slightly cooler temperature.

Stay active

Months of lockdowns and isolation, along with only going as far as the home office to work or study, has made it difficult to stay active like we normally would. But in 2022, there’s the opportunity to reset and get back to feeling fit and active once more. The fatigue of on-off quarantining has inspired many families to get moving more, so think about activities you can do as a family such as cycling, hikes, swimming or visiting local campsites and parks to enjoy fresh air and get moving.

Catch up on health checks

In a bid to prevent the spread of COVID-19, many people avoided their usual health check-ups, dental visits and screenings. But those checks are still necessary and delaying them longer than necessary could be putting you and your family’s health at risk in other ways. Check with your GP, optician and dentist to find out which checks you need and whether you’re overdue on any blood tests, mammograms, vision appointments and more.  Looking after your teeth and getting them checked over is important and a good way to check for other conditions. If you’re searching for a dentist then a search such as dentist London will yield details of a range of dentists who do simple check ups or more compelx dental work.

Final thoughts

To keep your family healthy, you need to maintain a positive, proactive mindset. That means focusing on the activities that will nourish their body and mind, as well as getting back up to date with any overdue check-ups that may have been delayed as a result of the pandemic. These are healthy habits that will set you all up for a healthier future.
