I can’t believe how much the weather has changed in the last week. It is beginning to feel much more autumnal and there’s a taste of the season ahead in the air.
This last week has felt much cooler and I’ve even packed away my little denim shorts as I don’t think they’ll be needed anytime soon. I do hope we get a last blast of summer sun and warmth, but I’m not so sure that we will.
But, autumn is my favourite time of year and already some trees are starting to see their leaves being to change and we are spotting the cases of the horse chestnuts growing on the trees nearby and noticing acorns too. There’s been a definite change to the temperature this last week and soon thoughts will turn to ordering the fuel for the wood-burning stove and getting the snuggly blankets out for afternoon sofa snuggles.
Prepping the House
There’s a lot of preparation for autumn and winter – I often find it’s a time to dig out the candle plates and make sure all the lights have bulbs ready. I need to dig out my sewing lights so I can stitch in the darker evenings and find one or two projects to work on over the darker months.
I also make sure the blankets are all washed and prepped ready for the times we are home after wet walks in the autumnal rain. This year I’ll probably get a couple of new blankets in new colours to freshen the house a little.
I also love to add candles; there really is something deeply relaxing about an evening snuggled on the sofa watching a film or listening to the radio with the gentle glow of a candle. It’s one of my real joys in life.
Prepping the house also means prepping the garden. I’ll be donning my jogging bottoms and getting the final clear of the garden done. Away will go the garden furniture. The children’s toys will be packed into the shed and the grass will get a final cut. We’ll harvest the potatoes and cut back the plants and trees that need it.
Prepping your Wardrobe
I must admit I am a big fan of autumnal clothes and I can’t wait to get the scarves and beanie hats out of the loft and pull the boots on for stomping around the canal in the leaves and mud. It’s always the best time of year to go walking. Whilst it might be a bit more jeans and wellies rather than fancy white dresses and sparkly heels, you can still have lots of fun.
We have a few family events over the autumn and winter so I do like to have the staple little black dress ready for any impromptu nights out and I try and style with a colourful scarf and other accessories, if you’re not too keen on a dress in the cooler months then the two-piece co-ord set below might work. This looks lovely with a pair of sparkly heels and it’s a great alternative to the classic little black dress for a night out with friends. It’s a flattering style with long wide legs that suit most.
Plan You Work Out Routine
It’s important in the autumn to continue with your workout routine – it’s super easy to snuggle under the covers an extra half hour and miss that spin class, especially when the clocks change and the mornings are darker and colder. I actually really like the autumn for running – it’s not too hot and not too cold and the air, to me at least, feels much fresher in the autumn.
You could always switch your early morning gym class to an online workout. There are plenty of great subscription-based apps that offer a whole range of workout options. There are, of course, lots of YouTube videos you can utilise as well. I like to switch between a free app I use and You Tube workouts to keep things fresh and to change the challenge. On those days when the rain can seem relentless throwing on shorts and a top and clearing some space at home can be all you need to do to change your mindset and revive your energy for the rest of the day.
Workouts at home are also a great way to get children involved too – my three always enjoy watching me and joining in – and telling me how easy it is! Oh to have their endless energy!
