In the next week or two, Damian has a milestone birthday approaching. He’s typically difficult to buy for and I’ve been really struggling with ideas of what to buy for him, as well as suggest to others what they could get him when they ask me for ideas.
We mark birthdays with breakfast out – much to the children’s delight, and I am sure that this is a tradition that will long continue. We will also, hopefully, get a meal out the two of us to mark his day. The reality is, however, that as you get older there’s simply less ‘stuff’ you want or need. But, with that in mind here are some ideas I have managed to come up with the mark those milestone birthdays.
A weekend away
A weekend away is always a nice way to mark an occasion, and I hope that the two of us will get away too in the next month or so. There’s plenty of places to choose from short city breaks in Europe to ‘stay-cations’. We will most likely stay in the UK and just enjoy the time the two of us without the distraction of the children and general home life. There are lots to choose from, lovely cities such as Liverpool, Chester, York or Durham, to more adventurous weekends such as enjoying sports in the Lake District or going on walks in North Wales. We will probably do something relatively sedate – take in a city, have lunch and just enjoy the time the two of us.
A gift to remember
For my 21st birthday, my Nana bought me a watch. I still have it and it’s a watch I wear for special occasions. I remember at the time thinking it was the best thing ever, and how expensive it was. It’s an item I really treasure and watches are a great item for gifting on special occasions. Chronoexpert is a site I’ve recently discovered and they sell all manner of watches including Second-hand Rolex Watches. They come with the papers and original box and it’s a great way to get a statement piece at a reduced rate, and a gift that really marks the occasion and will stand the test of time.
Kick-start a new hobby
I am really into running and there’s plenty of gear I would like to help in my training. Much of it I wouldn’t be able to justify the cost of myself, but as a milestone birthday gift, it would be ideal. Birthday’s also are a great time to consider future plans, and when you hit those milestones it’s a great time to reflect. Damian likes cycling so we have talked about maybe looking at a new bike or something to go with that. It’s also a great time to set a new challenge for yourself – participating in virtual events are a great way to stay motivated and reach your targets
Experience days
Experiences days such as hot air balloon rides, rally car driving and the such are those sorts of things that are great to do but are probably not the sort of thing you’d buy for yourself. Wine tasting sessions are also good fun too and I know friends who have done these and as well as enjoying the event have learnt a thing or two! Booking an experience day with friends is also a great way of marking the occasion – we are lucky to live near a lot of great outdoor type pursuits such as hovercrafts, aero dromes and the such.
Go to a show
Is there a show you’ve always wanted to see, or a band you’ve always wanted to hear? Then a milestone birthday is a perfect excuse for finally going to see them. You can make it into a short break if you choose a city away from home to watch them at, and of course book a nice meal and a few drinks and make it a real occasion to remember.
