I’ve written several times about my love of poetry and the children also enjoy reading poetry too. We were recently fortunate enough to be gifted a copy of the beautiful Tiger, Tiger Burning Bright. This is the follow-up anthology to the stunning I am the Seed.

Tiger,Tiger features an animal poem for each day of the year with illustrations by Britta Teckuntrup. It’s a weighty book and one that is perfect for gifting this Christmas time.

Tiger, Tiger is my standout poetry anthology of the year; everything about this book is stunning from the glorious tiger on the cover to the bright orange binding and page marker. The poems selected to feature a wide range of styles from short Haiku’s to longer length poems. There are funny poems and thought-provoking poems and everything in between.

The poems have been cleverly curated into groups that suit the time of year they’re aligned to; polar bears for January and hedgehogs in the autumn. Peacocks for March and ladybirds for August. The wide range of animals reflected in this anthology is sure to keep children engaged as they seek to find their favourites.

As well as a contents page and a list of poems for each month, you can also search by poet, index of all poem or by the first line. It’s been great for when I have been looking for poems about a particular animal.

You can find them here.  We have used some of these notes and it was lovely to see how the children drew their own tigers. I plan to revisit this again next year to see how their interpretations have changed. I also love that the older two, between them, can recite those famous first few lines of Tiger Tiger Burning Bright.

Tiger, Tiger is the perfect addition to any home library. with its 366 poems, there really is something for everyone. There are classics and more contemporary works. There are poems from around the world and some that have been translated. It does an excellent job of evoking the richness and diversity of nature which are aided by Britta Tecknuntrups stunning artwork. This absolutley is a book to gift and love. A book that will last the ages and can be enjoyed by young and old alike.

This is a book that is rightly winning many awards this year and enjoys a special place on our bookshelf.
