Things I’ve Noticed as I Get Older

Ad

I have a milestone birthday approaching at the end of this year and as ever, it is a time to reflect on how life has changed and how the things I find myself doing in my spare time have changed. Where once I would have enjoyed perusing the local town centre shops on a Saturday, or buying the latest magazines and having a read, I find myself less inclined to do that. Here are just a few things I’ve noticed as I get older.

Embracing niche interests

I am no longer too bothered about what people think about my interests in life. I enjoy needlecrafts and, whilst I recognize it’s not to everyone’s tastes, having the time and energy to create a piece of ‘art’ I find satisfying and enjoyable. Learning new a skill and finishing off projects if something I enjoy. Spending my time looking at new patterns and designers really interests me. I’ve learned a lot over the last couple of years as I have found the time to better focus on this craft. I also have friends who to embrace their inner geek! I have friends who are really into home brewing beers and have some serious kit that they use as well as really detailed knowledge of how to brew different beers. I have others friends who are passionate about environmental issues and support work around that. Whatever your niche interest is, be it something like finding the perfect ford 427 crate engine ‌for a car refurbishment or following your local sports team, dedicating time and energy to these interests is definitely a joy as you get older.

Looking after myself more

I have found that I most definitely look after myself better now I am older. Be it just generally eating better and buying better quality foods or taking the time to find a decent foot care clinic near me to help me take better care of my feet. I feel less guilt at looking after myself and I am better clued into what I need. I understand my hair and skin more, so can buy the best products for them, as well as just know how better to take care of my mental health and resting up when I need to. Even just spending time in the bath with a book is a great way to look after me more and I definitely find joy in these little moments.

Having time to Learn more

One of the real joys of getting older is having the chance to learn more about the things you want to and not being constrained by school or exam curricula. This means that I can follow my own interests more and not have to feel I should be focused on something else. Learning for the joy of it and because it interests you is a real treat, no matter what the interest.  Be it reading up on local issues, learning more about specific periods of history that aren’t covered at school or even learning more about how supply chains such as BCI Worldwide work, a lifelong passion for learning really comes into its own as you get older and have the time and freedom to explore these areas.
