I decided at the end of 2019 that I really wanted to read more in the new year. Pre-children I read lots and lots and it’s really lapsed. I started the year with a huge reading pile that I wanted to try and clear.
I signed up for this book tour at the end of 2019 and read this book in the Christmas – New Year lull. It is an absolutely brilliant book – so good that I read it all in one sitting – reading way past my bedtime and into the early hours!
What’s the story about?
Well simply put this is a story about the main character, Clara, finding herself after learning that her boyfriend and best friend had been cheating on her. She ups and move to the tiny village of Merryknowe. The village itself is anonymous, no reason for anyone to stop by and a rapidly ageing population. But what is Clara hiding and who will she meet in Merryknowe?

Characters
The characters are really well developed in this book and they’re all really likeable and, importantly, believable. There’s Rachel who needs help and support to see the good in herself, Pansy and Henry who need to move on and take the next step in their lives and the wonderfully mysterious Tassie who seems to know the direction of travel for everyone in Merryknowe!
What I loved
I adored this book so much; it’s rare that I find a book I want to read in one go but this one I did. I loved all the characters and enjoyed seeing them make peace with their own sad histories as they learnt to move on. I loved the mystery and intrigue of Tassie who seemed to be passing her skills on to the young Pansy. I didn’t want to read the final chapters as I knew it would make me cry, and it did. But as sad as the closing pages are it is the right ending for this book.
Starting over at Acorn Cottage is an absolute gem of a book and I’ll be looking out for more of Kate Forster’s books in the future.
