Bird Spotter Guides and Handbooks
It’s important I think to have a decent bird spotting guide or handbook. We have a couple of different ones, but the main ones that are most used are the Nosy Crow Bird Spotter Handbook, RSPB Pocket Guide to British Birds and RSPB What’s That Bird?

The Nosy Crow Handbook is really good for children as it’s super accessible and H loves this book. There’s information about the birds and they’re organised well so it’s easy to find what you are looking for. The other two RSPB guides and small enough to go into a bag, but we tend to leave them at home and refer to them when we get in. There’s lots of information about the birds included imagery of the male/female of the species as well as juveniles. They contain information about when and where in the UK you might see them.
General Bird Books
As I want to do a fair bit on birds this year I bought a couple of other bird books to add to the home library. We absolutely love The Big Book of Birds by Yuval Zommer and I’m so glad I decided to add this to our collection. It’s absolutely brilliant books packed with information about all manner of things! We used this for our robin project and I can see it being a key resource for future projects. I also bought the DK find out Birds book which D has really enjoyed looking through as well as this RSPB Nature Guide Birds book which I really like.
We also have the wonderful Sounds of the Skies book and the World of Birds which are both books that play bird sounds; great for helping children to identify the different songs.
