April has seemed like a strange month. We took a proper two week half term break around Easter time, and much of our activities were off over a three week period due to differing holiday breaks in different local authorities. It’s had the effect of making April feel a little fragmented in many ways.
Core Subjects
Maths has continued as ever and I’m content with the progress all three are making with their maths studies. H continues to excel in maths work and is always keen to learn. D and E are progressing well and I plan to use the next few months to see where they are up to and identify any gaps in knowledge to work on over the summer with them.
English wise H is doing well with his reading and Em has been busy writing a story. She’s really motivated with writing and she’s been busy writing this particular story for a while now. We have also started the Percy Poll’s Peculair Plants book from Twinkl as a read aloud and are working through the guided reading for that. This linked well to some plant based work we had been looking at earlier in the month.
Project Work
The main projects in April were the Sri Lanke project that we started in March, using the Chatty Zebra pack as the basis for this. We have enjoyed doing this and have learnt quite a lot about Sri Lanka. We also had the board game fair right at the end of April so the children enjoyed making their games for this. D and H made a game with my Dad whilst I took E to the theatre and then Em worked on hers later in the month.
We also looked at Nikola Tesla as part of our Post from the Past subscription. I am definitely planning a more detailed project using this letter as the basis, I just need to work out when to fit it in, perhaps it will be a project over the summer.
Regular Groups
As mentioned above, our regular groups took a break for Easter, and with the bank holiday Monday in April we missed some things for three weeks. The groups that have been running we have joined in with which has been good for the children.
Days Out
We have had a few days out in April, making the most of the half term activities. We did a Scarecrow trail with friends in a local town as well as a trip to the cinema another day. We also took part in some activities at the local library as well as getting out and about for a walk in the better weather.
We enjoyed a trip to the theatre to see the Jungle Book one evening and Em and I went to see Beauty and the Beast in Manchester with my mum which we all really enjoyed.
The older two also took part in the St George’s Day Parade as part of the Cub Scout unit which they both really enjoyed.
We have done lots of bits in pieces in April, and enjoyed a lot of ‘down time’ and made the most of the better weather. It’s been nice to stop for a little time but we are ready to get back into the usual routines now for May.
