Our Month in Home Education -June 2022

June has been and gone and with it another birthday for one of the children. June has been busy and the children have worked hard to finish up projects as well as progressing through the usual core subjects too. It’s felt a bit stilted in parts due to D not being well at the start of the month and then injuring his arm at football and needing x-rays at A&E. These little breaks where we weren’t anticipating them can be frustrating, and time-consuming, but it is what it is and the important thing is that they’re all well.

Core Subjects

H has ploughed on with his maths and completed a couple of smaller activity books as well as continuing on through his maths no problem books. D has completed his latest book and things seemed to have clicked for him recently with some mathematical bits and pieces. I need to order the next batch of books for the children, so that’s high on my list for the coming weeks to make sure I have the next sets of books for the children. I also need to spend some time over the next month looking at some bits on Twinkl to help consolidate the learning so far.

H is doing really well with his reading and he is almost independently reading now; he just needs that extra nudge of confidence. He has been continuing to enjoy the Reading Chest books and is keen to move up to another book band.

Project Work

In June we finished up our learning on the Tudors by looking at Shakespeare and gave a particular focus to a Midsummer Night’s Dream. We enjoyed this study and we managed to weave in some of our own creative writing for this Shakespeare work.

We also enjoyed the Picasso Post from the Past letter and did a small artist study using this letter as the basis of our work. I wrote about this in more detail here. The children really enjoyed this study and I want to do some more artist work with them so we will definitely be picking that up again in the autumn term; I just need to have a think about whether we do just the four of us or if we try and do something with friends too.

And finally, our big project this month was for the Literature Fair (held on 1 July). We used the Laura Ingalls Wilder Post from the Past letter as the basis of our study and read the Little House on the Prairie book. We really enjoyed this sudy and managed to do quite a bit. We also had a lot of interesting discussions about attitidues to the Native Americans as well as how life changed over time. I intend to write a more in depth post about this project in the coming days.

Regular Groups

Spanish lessons have continued for the three children as has athletics, football and swimming. Em earned her National Curriculum swimming badge this month which she was very pleased with.

D and E continue to enjoy cubs and they helped out at the summer fair in June, and managed to win their body weight in chocolate!

Music has been a bit truncated with the May half-term holiday and their music teacher not being well. They have kept up their practice and D has his grading during July, so he is looking ahead to that. I am sure he will be glad to have that done and dusted and moving onto practicing some other pieces!

D and E continue to enjoy cubs and H will start his scouting journey in July, which he is very excited about!

Days Out

June has been busy with days out here and there, trying to make the most of the better weather. We have been to a couple of National Trust places, we have been fruit picking with friends and completed a local treasure trail. The children have all enjoyed the cricket sessions that they have started but a few late nights here and there have taken the toll on them.

We had the car in for its MOT one day so had a lovely stroll with my mum to the local village for a wander and a coffee (and milkshake for the children). Having days to rest up when D wasn’t well or was in pain with his arm has been much needed and we will start July with a short break from work (but still attending regular activities) before we do another three weeks of work before a summer break.
