Usually, at this time of year, my social feeds are full of end of year gifts for teachers. Teachers do a fantastic job and I’m sure they enjoy the gifts that are received. But for me, this time of year turns to what do I need to get myself to prepare for the academic year ahead?
I put a lot of planning and effort into organising the stuff for home educating the children and I do use this time of year as an excuse to treat myself to something new. The summer holidays were always a time when I’d stock up on new stationery; pens and pads of paper, and it’s no different now. I always enjoy looking for any stationery related bargains!
But, here are the top items that I’ll need to get in ahead of the new academic year, This year we will begin at the end of July and take a break in September, when we can, hopefully, get out to more places.
A Personalised Gift
I do like a good personalised gift, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have been sent this beautiful notebook with my name stamped into it – it means that there’s no danger of the children claiming it as their own, as they are often prone to do when I bring notebooks home.

Notebooks are a staple of my life and I always have one or two on the go with lists of things to do, work to prepare for projects the children are working on or jobs I want to do. This particular notebook is slim enough to go into my bag and holds both a plain and ruled booklet of paper as well as cardholders too. It secures shut which is helpful for when I add papers in there too. I like to have a notebook with me for those moments when we are at groups and I can set to work planning or drawing out project ideas.
Personalised Gifts Market have lots of great items available so it’s worth a look if you’re looking to treat yourself, or a loved one, with something personalised.
Practical Items for the Next Academic Year
I tend to treat myself to certain new items for the next academic year, so notebooks and diaries and the such. I need a new academic diary and I think this year I’ll opt for a page a day one. I had been using an A4 week to view diary that last few years, but as we work on ever detailed projects, the space for me to makes notes is no longer large enough in the week to view diaries! A new diary and some new pens will be perfect. I like good quality ink pens and often struggle to justify the expense, but at this time of year, I feel like I’ve earnt those new pens! I also need to get some sticky tabs for marking where we are up to in textbooks we are working from – I can no longer wing it now the children are older and needing stretching further in this academic work.
A Sweet Treat
And, as if I need any excuse! A sweet treat is a welcome reward to myself for the work I’ve put in during the past year! A new mug with hot chocolate or coffee sachets and a bar of good quality chocolate seems like just reward to me… although I am sure the children will be keen to share with me if I do treat myself. I often find myself with a hot drink in an evening planning the work for the days ahead for the children. Planning and prep isn’t for all home educators, but it’s definitely something that works for us, and having a sweet treat helps to keep me going!
