Damian has had some annual leave and we have tried to make the most of it by getting out and about to explore some new places. My parents had recently visited Lymm Dam and suggested it as a place for us to head to. So, on a rather wet Friday we headed there.
Finding Lymm Dam
Lymm Dam isn’t far from us and it’s probably about 15 minutes drive from Dunham Massey for those who are familiar with there. We parked up easily at the small car park at St Mary’s Church and then headed along the footpath. There is a heritage trail that you can follow (more about there here) We started to follow that trail but I think we went wrong somewhere as we ended up on a non-descript main road for the last stretch.
What is Lymm Dam?
Lymm Dam was originally built in the 1800’s to allow for a road to be built. Lymm village itself is very pretty and there’s enough (in normal times) to sustain a full day out. There are canal towpaths and the river as well as the Dinosaur Footprint to take a look at (and I think there is a museum too that explores this in a little more detail). And of course, walking around the Dam provides for a good day out.

Our Trip
We headed out along the start of the heritage trail and enjoyed having a stroll along the towpaths and the such. We saw a mobile coffee station close to the start of our walk on the main road near the dam as well as an ice-cream van. As we got through the village and down to the towpath there was a (plant-based) cafe on a barge which looked good. We might have stopped for a drink had we not been at the start of our walk.
We had a nice stroll along the heritage trail before getting back to the dam. From there we walked the whole way round. We saw a lot of wildlife on the water, including swans, mallards, moorhens, cormorants and great crested grebes. There were plenty of people fishing on the water too and I suspect had it been a drier day we might have stopped more to spot signs of other wildlife in the area. We did come to a clearing near the end of the walk where there was a tree swing which all three children had great fun on!

There was also a lovely flower fairies trail at the time we visited (July 2020) that the children enjoyed and I’ve since been looking on ebay for some Flower Fairy books as Em is increasingly interested in the flowers we spot as we walk (thankful for the seek app which helps me identify them!).
Lymm Dam was lovely for an afternoon stroll and the children enjoyed climbing and running around. It’s definitely a spot I’ll return to again later this year.

It’s lovely isn’t it? I think it will be really nice I. Winter too.
Yep a good place
