Mother’s Day is fast approaching (15th March in the UK this year) and with it thoughts are turning to gifting.
My own mum can be pretty hard to buy for and whilst I like to think I am quite easy to choose a gift for, I probably am a little tricky too. Books are always good for me, but there’s always the risk of choosing one I already have!
I like to try and do different and thoughtful gifts. Now my own children are a little older and I’m not quite as knee deep in the day to day intense care that very young children require, I have a bit more headspace and clarity to think more!
Last year, for my mum, I picked up a selection of books I thought she might enjoy. Some were new and other’s were ones I saw in charity shops. I wrapped each one up and included with them some chocolate or sweets, and it became a monthly book gift for my mum for six (I think!) months. Both my mum and I enjoy reading so I was quite pleased with this idea!
This year I am a little undecided what to get. I have recently gifted her a lovely bottle of women’s perfume. It’s the sort of thing she would never usually treat herself to so it was nice to be able to give this gift.

Traditional Gifts
Traditional gifts such as flowers and chocolate or a bottle of wine are great options, and always appreciated. I remember my children, when very young, would be so excited to give me a box of my favourite chocolate (maltesers) and even happier helping me enjoy them! Flowers are always well received and it is rare that I don’t have fresh flowers in the house. Jewellery is another lovely option to consider. I am not a big wearer of jewellery but do like a nice watch or a simple bracelet. A small studded pair of earrings or a pendant necklace can also be a nice treat and, if you’re particularly crafty you could always make a pair using perhaps sea glass you’ve collected together or something such as pressed flowers encased in resin. There’s so many lovely ideas that you’re bound to find something to give a personal touch.

Practical Gifts
Sometimes, it’s about getting mum something that she needs. A new jumper, a new bag or new slippers. Not always the most glamorous of gifts but it can be an opportunity to treat your mum to something she wouldn’t usually buy herself. I know I am always looking for ‘the best value’ option for myself whereas my husband and children would look to the more luxury end of the women’s slippers section that Very have for me. My current pair were a gift and are super warm and snuggly, but I would never have justified the expense myself. Thankfully others did for which I am very grateful!

Understand Mum’s Hobbies and Interests
Contrary to popular belief, mum’s hobbies don’t include cleaning, tidying and juggling everything. Gift your mum something that enables her to follow her interests. For example, the day before mother’s day I am going to the Texstyle Event in Manchester. A whole day for myself and a friend to peruse the show and just enjoy our hobby. Maybe your mum loves a particular author, maybe look for any events they’re at at local bookshops and gift a ticket. Cookery experiences and gin mixing classes are also popular ideas too.
Or just enjoying an activity together, such as a jigsaw or a game. Just a quiet hour together sharing in an activity can be great for everyone.

And if all else fails…
But mostly, remember that what many mum’s probably just want is a nice day, a phone call or a visit, a hug and a coffee in bed and perhaps the opportunity to get a nice relaxing bath without anyone needing their attention right at that exact moment.
