Musings on Autumn

I love autumn; there’s something about the so very obvious changing of the seasons and the promise of things to come that is magical. I think my happiest memories with the children fall in the autumn; the collecting conkers, kicking up leaves and jumping in puddles. They love to come home and get into fresh, warm clothes and have a hot chocolate whilst snuggled up reading after those stomps along the local canal. I hope that, when the children are older, they remember these days too and think of them fondly.

This autumn seems to be one that is going to be super busy, which after last year is most welcome! We have had some birthdays to celebrate and have more to come and plenty of fun things planned together. Now that the world has opened up a little it’s made our Home Ed meet-ups more of a reality and we are busy enjoying those opportunities.

We have so many activities coming up and I’m hosting a few things too which is lovely if a little daunting. Autumn is also a time to pack away the summer clothes of denim shorts and strappy white dresses and instead get out the warmer items! I am here for the chunky knits and scarves this year and am looking forward to adding the colour to my autumn wardrobe.

When I’m hosting stuff for the HE community I like to dress smartly and the trousers below are from Femme Luxe. I love how they are super versatile and comfortable. The beige ones are high-waisted and I’ve worn them with a chunky long-line jumper as well as a t-shirt and cardigan. They are also slim fit so go well with flat shoes or boots.

The black and white ones are great for adding a bit of interest to an outfit and again go well with a range of clothing. Again they’re a slim fit leg and work well with heels for an evening out.

Autumn is also a time of year when I feel we make more of an effort to do things socially with friends. I find that I tend to see friends in the autumn more for meals out and to enjoy walks on the fresh autumnal days.  There is usually an increase in markets and the such that are always good to have a social wander and chat at, and to usually enjoy a coffee and slice of cake at!

I also enjoy the nights drawing in and lighting the wood-burning stove and watching films with the children, although this year they’ve all got into Strictly Come Dancing in a big way so the weekly film afternoon is a dance afternoon instead. I don’t think it’ll be too long until they have me digging out the sparkly black dresses and the smart shirts and hosting our own dance show!

In terms of the children’s learning in the autumn, this is always a time of year when we seem to really crack on and get some good work done. We have got a few things planned for the forthcoming science fair that I’m looking forward to doing with them and I have a study on Australia to write; I’m going to mirror the one we did on Japan as this structure worked well for them (and me). Learning about Australia, I hope, will be a good project for them and help occupy us as we move into the winter. We will also try and get H reading a little more independently this autumn and push on with the maths work for the older two and try to get their current workbooks finished.

Finally, autumn does, of course, mean we can begin to think and prepare for Christmas. I’m not sure what the children will be requesting this Christmas as their gifts but I am hoping to get that sorted early so I can sit back and not worry about having to source last minute ite,s. They are already thinking about the Christmas tree decorating, the sweet treats we will eat whilst doing this and of course, thinking about the matching pyjamas they want, the Christmas films to watch and the crafts to make and enjoy. They’ve already managed to convince me to get the chocolate coins and hot chocolate bombs in ready!

Do you enjoy the autumn too?
