We will soon be marking D’s ninth birthday and it’s probably the first time I have struggled to think of ideas for what to get him.
After much thinking and stealth like quizzing of him I thought I’d share some ideas of the things we thought might make good gifts this year. Please note links to products on Amazon are affiliate links.
Something Active
His big wish list item is a scooter. He has specifically asked for a foldable two-wheeled scooter. We have opted for this JD Bug Scooter from skates.co.uk. I like this as it looks like it will last him a good while (the main column is height adjustable) and it folds up easily and has the added bonus of a strap for when I, inevitably, end up carrying it. It looks to be sturdy and well made and hopefully, this will tick the boxes for him. We also need to replace his bike helmet and I plan to take him to get a new one the week of his birthday.
I have also bought him some new sports tops. He likes the ones from Decathlon so I picked up a couple of those earlier in the week. We have had these in the past and they wash well and last well, although the sizing does seem a bit off for some of the clothes. The age 8-9 top I ordered for him would have been about right for H (he is five) so I’ve ended up going for age 11+ for him. D is probably about average size height-wise but very slim so it’s unusual for him to be in such a different size to his age.
Something to Read
D is really into non-fiction books and has been enjoying the Quick History Of…. Books. We have bought him the two he was missing from this series and I hope he enjoys them. I have also added the Adventures on Trains series to his wish list as I’ve heard good things about these and think he would love these. Another brilliant series for nine-year-olds is The Land of Roar – we have enjoyed this a lot this last year and I recommend them to everyone.
Something to Play
We do like board and card games here. Harry Potter Uno looks good and Uno is probably one of the most played games we own. I saw it First Ancient Egypt would play to his love of history and is a game that everyone can join in with. Hex Bugs have also been an unexpected hit with D after his younger brother got some for his birthday. They’ve both really enjoyed playing with these and I think there’s expansion sets you can buy to create worlds.
Supporting His Interests
D really enjoys coding and playing around on Scratch. I was buying some stuff online for a project we are working on and came across these kits for his microbit; they look great and I think he’d find them interesting. There’s also stuff for Raspberry Pi (although he doesn’t have a pi yet). There are a few sites that sells kits for the microbit; which is a great entry level tool for kids. I like these here at the PiHut too, and I think this might be something we look into for Christmas.
