I am slightly delayed with this post, mostly due to Easter but also partly due to our internet service being down for three days which meant I fell behind with prep for the children and my blog. But we are up and running again so I thought I’d share what we have been up to during March
Core Subjects
D finished his Maths No Problem book and swiftly moved onto his next book. It was definitely the right option for us to use this curriculum and I am glad I stuck with it. Em has a little more to do to finish her book but I suspect she will get that finished this month and move onto her next book. H is ever interested in maths and has been through a phase of almost constantly calculating sums. He works through his Maths No Problem book on a less frequent basis as whilst he is classed as reception age he is still below compulsory school age. We will pick this up properly in September this year.
We have been doing a lot of reading, as ever, and I am encouraging the older two to do more on their creative writing. They’re definitely getting better at this which is pleasing.
Project Work
We had our Speaking & Listening group at the start of March, with a theme of ‘things that crawl’. All three presented their projects for this.
We also completed a short Stone Age project which they all enjoyed and we had a lot of fun creating cave art and learning in general about life during this time. They also designed and made Stone Age outfits for their teddy bears. We also made a start on an Ancient Greeks project and I intend for this to run all through April before we move onto a famous person study.
We celebrated World Book Day with a fun Charlie and the Chocolate Factory themed day – this was a lot of fun! We also did some other World Book Day themed bits in the days beforehand too.
Our Artist themed studies continued this month with Keith Haring and Frida Kahlo – two very different artists but thoroughly fascinating. I think we are all really enjoying these studies and learning a lot from it.
We did some work on the Suffragette movement as part of International Women’s Day and this is something I’m going to build on again later in the year I think. We did a lot on this over the week and made cakes decorated in suffragette colours, embroidered favorite quotes from women, and learned about key figures in the UK Suffragette movement.
We also did some of the Kids Love Classics sessions this month too which were really fun and engaging and we all learn so much from these.
Finally, projects wise, the children all completed their bronze RSPB awards and continued to work towards their Canal & River Trust Badge
Regular Groups
The theme for our poetry group this month was Spring and the range of poems the children chose was lovely. I think the children enjoy having this time in the month to share their favorite poems (with a sweet treat!)
Beavers and Cubs for the older two have continued and Daniel ran a session this month too. I can’t wait for these to be back face to face for them as they both enjoy these groups an awful lot.
Spanish classes continued and the children are ever more proficient with their Spanish.
Days Out
Days out have been local and involved walking along the canal! Now that the restrictions have started to ease with have a (risk assessed) educational meet planned for April and I suspect we will meet up ad-hoc with friends as time and weather permits.
Other Bits and Pieces
We have had lots of lovely ad-hoc events this month too. We attended the book launch for Swim Shark Swim, had a zoom meeting for Plant a Flower Day arranged by another family, had a talk from the Canal & River Trust, had a talk from a local author about her first book, did a St David’s Day Zoom session where we learned lots and I hosted a fun session to learn about Holi. We had a storytelling session with Andy Copps which was superb and have continued to work on our STEM challenge badges (coding and learning about circuits). We finished the month with some Easter themed bits and a fab Easter Bonnet session organized by a friend.
All in all March has been a whirlwind of a month and April promises more of the same.
