Welcome to another round-up of our Home Education and this one signals the end of the year. It’s been a strange year, again, but it is what it is and I feel that despite that strange times, we have done a lot this year and probably been more productive than many schools (if my social media feed is to be believed). December was an exceptionally quiet end to the year for lots of reasons and probably the long break we all needed. We are raring to get back into things though for January.
Core Subjects
We continued ticking along with maths and H has now moved onto division which is more of a challenge for him. He excels in maths at the moment so finding something that challenges him can be tricky! D and E continue to progress well through their books and I plan to continue the same approach into 2022.
I’ve also been getting the older two to do more creative writing type work. They’re both capable but can be a little resistant to writing at times so we need to work on that.
Project Work
We started our Australia project this month, and this will take us into 2022 when they present their work at the Geography Fair. We have, so far, concentrated on the first fleet, Sydney and some of the wildlife but we will move around the country and look at other aspects too during January.
We have also been doing a lot of Christmas-themed crafts in the run-up to Christmas time.
Regular Groups
Swimming and athletics have continued for the children and they’re really enjoying these sessions and there’s been a short break for Christmas time.
All three are enjoying their Spanish lessons and it’s lovely to hear H drop in some Spanish words every now and then. These should continue in the New Year time.
Em and D are still having their music lessons and they’re getting better and better. Again there’s been a short Christmas break but they’ll commence lessons again soon and have been practicing a lot too.
Beavers ended with Em achieving her Bronze Scout award and Cubs ended with a small celebration for D. We look forward to these groups starting up again soon.
Days Out
We had a lovely trip to Burton Mere with friends to do the Robin Robin trail, although it was an insanely cold day so we didn’t last quite as long as we might have hoped to!
We also met with some local friends to do a nativity trail organized around the local area by a local church. This was a great way to get outdoors and walk the local area.
We have had some other local wanders here and there and the children have spent time with their grandparents too (which allowed me to get some admin done like an eye test and my booster vax).
We also went to the Pantomine which was organised by another HE family and was a lot of fun; the children really enjoyed this and it was a good start to our Christmas celebrations.
We did an ice sculpture trail, saw a steam train passing through our station and went to the local lights be switched on and enjoyed mince pies, mulled wine and some carol singing!
Other Bits and Pieces
Other than that, December has mostly been about Christmas, including the Home Ed Nativity that I helped to organize and was a lot of fun. Other than that, the month has been unusually quiet. January however will be much busier with lots planned so do keep an eye on my social media accounts to see what we are up to.
One of the hi-lites for me has to be the music “concert” that the children did for us on Christmas morning. I can’t believe how well they are doing. Fantastic, and looking forward to see what you do this year.
I’ll add to that and agree with the ‘concecrt’ but also the carols they sang for us and their all round development as nice people is ajoy to see
