I know this is a little overdue(!) but life got in the way and I figured this would be ‘evergreen’ content so there would be value in sharing for future years. I’ve been missing our short sharp projects so this month I had planned in some small projects.
These were mostly organized around the PawPrint Badges we had, one of which was the St David’s Day Badge. I find using the badges as prompt works well for us and the children enjoy looking at the forthcoming events and choosing a badge to work on.
What we Did
I have stocked up on some daffodil-themed bits from Baker Ross so we made up some of those and used them to decorate the windows. We also had daffodils that we had planted in the autumn that had come up for 1 March, as well as some daffodils I had bought from the shop which had bloomed.
We did some drawing of the daffodils using the jug of them and also by following a tutorial on YouTube. Em in particular enjoyed this and we displayed the finished drawings on the window too.
We made some leek and potato soup to share at lunchtime and used some resources to learn about St David’s day. The ones that we found useful are:
- St David’s Day read and colour (I used this with H)
- Comprehension
We also spent some time talking about Wales and where it is, some of the places in Wales that we have been to as well as talking about the geography of the country. We also looked at the flag of St David and the Welsh flag.
Learning with friends
A friend had kindly arranged a zoom session for us. During this session we learned about the story of St David and some of the traditions around the day, She had also arranged for her friend who is a native Welsh Speaker to join us to teach the children some Welsh and to tell us about how they would usually celebrate the day.
We then moved on to making a love spoon, learning the traditions behind the spoon, and decorating our own. We used this information here to guide our designs. This was fun and the children enjoyed making these.
Finishing our Project
We finished up our short study by drawing a poster or designing a guidebook for Wales. It was fun to see what the children thought made Wales a good place to visit – H was particularly keen to stress they have caravans in Wales that you can stay in!
All in all a short project but one we really enjoyed. Had we still not had birthday cake left then we would have tried our hand at making Welsh cakes, but maybe another time.
