I thought I knew most of the kids publishing houses, either through books I had as a child, books bought for the children or books borrowed from the library. When I recently won a book via Toppsta by Priddy Books and was intrigued by them.
A quick look at their website and social media and I knew their books were something different. The team at Priddy Books recently sent me a bundle of books (in a lovely funky tote bag which has become Daniel and Emma’s library book bag) and I thought I’d share them here.
The first, Playtown is a lift the flap book with a difference. It is a large solid board book with loads of fab lift the flaps. The books take the reader through Playtown, complete with high street, airport, train station, hotel amongst others. each page has lots of little flaps for little hands to lift and discover what’s hiding underneath.
Daniel loves this book and often sits there reading it quietly to himself, lifting each flap and giggling at the things he finds. It is a brilliant book and there is so much to discover and talk about. Each page is tabbed so you can go straight to the one you want. So we often look at the train station page, as Daniel is endlessly fascinated by trains. This looks like a great series of books and there is a whole book published a few months ago dedicated to Playtown Airport so I am sure that will be added to Daniel and Emma’s birthday wishlist soon. This is my favourite lift the flap book that we own and I think there is around 70 flaps in this books. All are sturdy and have stood up to small hands opening and closing (and opening again)
The second book is another lovely lift the flap book, First 20 Numbers. Both Daniel and Emma really like this book, and it’s been a great one to have in the bag for when we head out somewhere where they might get restless as it is small enough to add to the usually packed change bag. I am doing a lot of number work with Daniel at the moment as he begins to recognise numbers as well as improving his counting. This books is really engaging and has lots of really bright images and lovely flaps to lift. Books like this that have a really clear educational slant to them work well when they’re appealing to small people and this one has really appealed to Daniel and Emma. Emma doesn’t often engage with books, but this is one she has picked up of her own accord and looked through (often upside down!) and she likes pointing out the things she recognises and can say.
Who’s My Mum? is another smaller book and this features young animals with some clues as to who mum is. The reader pulls the tab across to reveal the mum. Daniel hasn’t been overly engaged with this one but Emma has – just the past ten days or so she is beginning to enjoy books more, especially those featuring animals and she likes this one, especially as the mummy animals is revealed.
The three books mentioned above are all really bright and bold and very engaging for babies and toddlers. All have plenty to keep little ones engaged and the images are really bold, clear and visual. They are the brightest books on our bookcase and are very distinctive.
The final books we were sent is a little different and falls under the ‘Smart Kids’ range. Dino Bites is all about dinosaurs so sure to appeal to young children (I’ve written recently about my own love of dinosaurs when I was younger). There are lots of facts about dinosaurs and activities to complete such as colour, quizzes, word searches as well at stickers – and who doesn’t love stickers? There is also a glow in the dark dinosaur skeleton (although we haven’t done this yet as Daniel goes to bed before it gets dark!). There is plenty to keep young minds engaged and busy as well as imparting a bit of knowledge and information, all done in the same engaging manner that the other Priddy Books I have seen do.
I really rate these books from Priddy Books, they seem like a fun publishing house. There is a wide range of different books available including touch and feel books, bight and bold picture books (which I plan to hunt out at our local library) and sticker books amongst others.
