I do enjoy a good history book, and ones like this one called Step Inside Homes From History is a fantastic hands-on book that does a great job of demonstrating just how much our homes have changed over the years! Even in the last 125 years or so there have been huge changes and this book does an excellent job at demonstrating this.

About this Book
The book, Step Inside Homes from History, takes a number of different homes from different times periods and opens the doors for children to explore them in more detail. Not only do we see how the style and layout of the homes themselves have changed, but we also get a glimpse at the families who might have lived there. What my children noticed most was the staff in the earlier homes!
We have a number of National Trust properties nearby that we have visited over the last few months and it’s always interesting to look at those homes and to see how they match up to those from the same period in this book. Over the half-term break we visited Dunham Massey and they had their servants quarters open, with staff playing the role of the kitchen and butler staff. I’m not sure the children appreciate what a different type of world it was back then, but having this book to look through to discuss how homes would have been during that period is useful
Is it just houses?
As well as the physical homes I like how the fashion of the day is also shown, the children particularly like the Tudor dress although I am not sure if they’d have quite enjoyed it in reality! It really is fascinating how much things change and as beautiful as the grand dresses of the Tudor and Georgian eras were, I am glad to be living in slightly more relaxed and comfortable times!
This book is a treasure trove of information presented in a fun way; the cuts outs for the windows and homes as well as the context setting for each period of time gives for a really good introduction to the changes in social history.
