My book of the week is the fabulous Discovering Energy by Eduard Altarriba, Joannes Hirn and Veronica Sanz. It’s part of the Discovering Big Ideas series of books which is a series I love for the way in which is tackles such big concepts for young children.
This post is marked as ‘ad’ as I was sent this book by the publisher (with no obligation to review) and the post contains affiliate links. You can find my full disclosure policy here.
This book is aimed at ages 8 plus which I think is about right. It has really good and clear illustrations which guide the readers through this tricky subject.
Reading this book, you’ll learn about where energy comes from, how our understanding has developed and the many myriad ways that the human species has learnt to harness energy. We learn about fire all the way to nuclear power (something I really knew very little about before looking at this book).

This book is packed full of clever diagrams and snippets of text that break the ideas down into manageable chunks and I really like that it looks at ideas such as making energy cleaner and sustainable for the future – certainly a topic that is hot at the moment.
This series of ‘Discovering’ is really good. My oldest has really enjoyed leafing through these and it will certainly be a key book for us when we look at energy again later this year.

I like that things are broken down into short snippets that the older children have been able to dip in and out of without becoming too overwhelmed. This is another superb addition to this series of books and I am thrilled to be able to offer three of my readers the chance to win a copy of the fabulous book.
