This month Damian and I celebrate 13 years of marriage. It’s always a time of year to reflect on those years together and to give thoughts to how things have changed and where we hope to get to in our life together.
The traditional anniversary gift at 13 years is fur or textiles and the gemstone is citrine.
We got engaged in the March and we chose my engagement ring together. Looking at the engagement rings was a lot of fun, and I found it hard to find something that I liked and that suited my small hands. My ring size is quite small at a H, so it proved a little tricky to find engagement rings that had a small enough band and weren’t too weighted by the diamond. We did find a lovely ring in the end. There’s a lot of choice with engagement rings. Mine is quite a simple princess-cut diamond set on a yellow gold band. I know some high-end jewelry sites have platinum or white gold rings but my engagement ring was always going to be a yellow gold as my wedding band, from my Nana, is 24ct yellow gold so I wanted an engagement ring to match and complement this simple band.
We arranged our wedding relatively quickly and married in the November of the same year. We chose a November wedding as it fit in with my degree studies at that time (I had a natural break from October – January) and as we had been together four years by that point we didn’t see the point in hanging around!

Choosing My Bridal Jewelry
As mentioned above, my wedding band set the style for my bridal jewelry. I wanted something that was classic and quite simple in design. I looked at moissanite bridal sets to get ideas for the perfect engagement ring to complement my existing wedding band. Once I had this chosen I opted to buy some simple stud earrings and I borrowed a necklace and bracelet as my ‘something borrowed’ from my bridesmaid. These were quite beautiful pieces that complimented my dress beautifully.
I found choosing the bridal jewelry a lot of fun, and I have since added to my engagement and wedding rings with a half eternity ring that Damian bought when I turned 30. I’ve been looking at some more rings in recent weeks and may well add to my collection when my 40th arrives. Shesaidyes has some beautiful items and I might invest in a white gold ring next time, but for my right hand rather than my left. There are three choices of birthstone for me, tanzanite, turquoise or zircon which are all blues so I may opt for something that incorporates one of these colours. SheSaidYes has a beautiful ring that incorporates the turquoise stone so I may be dropping some heavy hints closer to the time!
What 13 Years Has Taught Me
The 13 years of marriage hs taught me that, whilst the wedding day is a lot of fun, it is only one day and it’s the time after that makes a marriage. I am glad that we didn’t spend too much on our wedding day and didn’t leave ourselves with debts. We thoroughly enjoyed the day and I am glad that I chose the engagement ring that I did. It is a classic cut and still looks lovely today.
Lots has changed over our 13 years of marriage and I look forward to the next 13 and seeing what they bring. I am glad we have made the choices we have made over the years and I look forward to our future to come.
