The World Game : Review

Ad – Gifted Item

We were recently sent a copy of The World Game which is a geography card game. We have been taking a look over the last week or two and I have been impressed with it, and I think it’s definitely one of those games that the more you play the more you’ll build up your knowledge about the world.

What is The World Game?

The World Game is a card game that tests the players’ geography knowledge. Suggested players are 2-6 and the age range is suggested as 5+. You can play it ‘Top Trumps’ style as the players build up their knowledge or you can challenge each other on your knowledge, or play a mixture of the two.

How The Game Works

There are 194 country cards that include a range of facts and information about each country and a large world map. Each country is numbered to correspond with the relevant fact card. Each card contains the following information about the country:

  • Capital City
  • Continent
  • Location
  • Flag
  • Area
  • Population
  • Highest Point
  • Number of Neighbouring Countries

The aim of the game is to get all the other players’ cards. On your turn, you can either call a Fact or call a Challenge.

Calling a fact is like playing Top Trumps and you might choose Population – each player throws their card into the centre and the player with the highest number wins the cards. The harder aspect of the game is the Challenge. On your turn, you select a player to face the challenge. That player can then choose one of the four challenges, Continent, Flat, Location or Capital City.  The other players can then attempt to answer the question, either winning or surrendering cards. I guarantee that no matter how good and in-depth you think your knowledge is, there will be a fair few countries that will throw you in this game! When I played with the children there were so many that I was struggling to place.

Building up Knowledge

What I really like about this game is that it is very unlikely that you will be able to correctly identify the challenges for all 194 countries, and so even the most travelled and knowledgable player is going to have a fair few cards that will trick them. There’s also an option to play it as a continents game if you were learning about a particular continent, or wanted to really perfect knowledge there. We have been looking at South America and I plan to get the South America country cards out and work on the location and capital cities with the children. It’s also a good topic chooser for home educating families – choose a card and learn about that country. There were so many places that I hadn’t heard of, and it was interesting to look into some of them. We were able to place some of them based on their flags or capital city names which gave clues to nearby countries or colonial links but others really confused us!

All in all I’m really impressed with The World Game, it’s made really well with good and strong quality cards and the size of the box means it’s a great game to take away on holiday or train journeys and is sure to help improve geographical knowledge.
