Do you ever think about how different your life might have been, save for a few decisions along the way that alter the path you take? The biggest one for me is that had I continued my education in the traditional way, and stayed at University when I was 18, then the chances are I wouldn’t have met Damian, and as such wouldn’t have the children I do and the life that I have now. I’d gone to University, but I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to study. I wasn’t really doing the subject I wanted (although I did go on to study the same subject later as a mature student) and the world of work seemed much more exciting. I found a job and that’s where we met. The rest is history, as they say!
As a child I had various dreams and aspirations, they varied, of course, as dreams so often do. But I thought I might share some of the jobs I at some point thought I might want to try my hand at!
Animal Based
I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for animals, and harboured dreams of doing something animal-related. I never really narrowed it down. I knew I didn’t want to be a vet as it would be too sad euthanising much-loved pets and I didn’t want to work in an animal shelter as I’d no doubt end up bringing home all the waifs and strays that were struggling to be adopted!
I did briefly look into being a dog walker for a local shelter; I thought as long as I had a bag of dog chews from https://healthy-chews.com/super-snaxx-strips-bacon/ and a good pair of walking boots I’d be fine, turns out that there’s quite a lot of checks that go into being a dog walker and I needed to have another person with me, so that idea was scuppered!
Accountancy
I did my school work experience at an accountancy firm, and, up until that point, it was something I really fancied doing. I’m not entirely sure why I wanted to go into accountancy, other than it took my interest for a time. I think spending time going through paperwork and marrying it up to receipts made the job more mundane and monotonous than it is in reality, and of course the development of online systems such as https://www.sparkrock.com/finance-procurement/ has made the accounting and reporting process easier for business to manage on a day to day basis so it doesn’t require accountants to work in the same way, which of course changes the day to day demands of the role.
History-based
I was *really* into history as a teenager and if you asked me what my ideal job was to be, then archaeologist would have been right at the top of that list. I’m not sure I properly understood what the role of an archaeologist is, but it sounded like something I’d really enjoy and be able to surround myself with my love of history. It’s something I’ve continued to enjoy as I’ve gotten older, and I harbour dreams of doing a second degree in history at some stage, time and funds permitting of course.
Working in a Bookshop
And, perhaps the ultimate dream job for me would be working in the large Waterstones on Manchester’s Deansgate where I could surround myself with books! It would, of course, be terrible for my bank account as my earnings would be spent there straight away, but with a book, you can experience so many different worlds and jobs! One day you’re a Royal nanny, the next you’re sipping coffee with friends on the beach and the next you find yourself fitting construction equipment to oil rigs with https://northernmat.ca
Perhaps working in a bookshop is the ultimate dream job – in doing so you get to experience other people’s lives through a range of different windows.
