Why being a parent feels like you’re on a game show

One of the things I remember when D first arrived was how I was so desperate for him to reach each new milestone, from rolling over, sitting up to of course talking and walking. It seemed that it took an eternity for him to get there and time moved slowly.

Fast forward seven years and I so very much wish time would slow down! Having three children means that life seems to move at warp speed and I can sometimes look at the clock and wonder where my day went. Of course, there are times when the days can seem very long; those days when everyone is a bit fractious and grumpy or when one of us is a little less than 100%. But, as each year ticks by and we mark a new birthday and enter a new season of childhood I can’t help but feel the time is going very very quickly.

We seem to be in a stage at the moment that I can only liken to being in a perpetual game show! The youngest two have their ‘daily question’ for their dad which they ask, every week day, without fail. E ask ‘How many people were in your work?’ and H asks ‘How many people were on your train?’. Damian will smile and patiently answer with ever more outlandish numbers each night. I had thought they would tire of asking, but still, a year on, it is a staple of our evening time conversation.

And I think it’s this naturally inquisitive nature that makes it feel like your on a game show – the quick-fire round where a (very tiny!) quiz show hosts fire a wide range of questions to you at any hour of the day!

This morning, over breakfast, Em asked me how old the Queen is, and if she’ll live to a 100. This was followed with ‘how old will I be when she is 100?’ and then ‘How old will you be?’. Not the most difficult of questions but hard enough when you’ve not eaten or had a morning coffee!

The questions do seem to get more and more abstract – questions about the radiators in the social area at PE versus the heating system in the sports hall (why are there radiators and air vents mum? What do they do? Why aren’t they like ours at home?) this then segued into conversations about how heating thermostats work to determine the temperature of a room as well as how it works when it’s both hot and cold to provide the right temperature. I best get reading the information on https://heatline.com to gen up on the different cables and such to ensure pipes don’t freeze!

And of course, anything can trigger a whole series of questions – I unexpectedly became knowledgable about crossbow broadheads after we watched Bambi (why would they do that, how do they do that? What weapons are used?) as well as being later quizzed on what would I rather be, an owl or a rabbit (an Owl as they’re wise!) and have I ever eaten deer? (no) and why not?

As much as I love my children, I do sometimes wish the constant quizzing would end…. I often find myself looking for another job… sites like this have personal support worker jobs to check out and there are of course many other jobs that I could do that would be paid and less quiz show like for me! It might give me a chance to rest my question weary mind for a while.

That said, I do quite enjoy some of the more bizarre questions and it is always fun to get a little insight into how their little minds are working and processing the world around them.
