Back in 2020 and early 2021, we did a lot of learning about different artists and different styles of art. I was super excited when I saw that this month’s Post from the Past was all about Pablo Picasso and thought it would be the perfect springboard back into this theme of work for us.
We are having a purposely quiet week here this week, so I decided that looking at Picasso would be a lovely activity for us to do together.
Materials I used
We already have our book of artists set up but inside these I have:
- World Map
- Passport size image of the artist
We also used:
- Pablo Picasso Post from the Past Letter
- Plain paper
- blue and green colouring equipment
- black pens
- Images of some of Picasso’s work.
How I Approached the Session
We started by reading aloud the Picasso letter and stopping to look at some of the pieces of work referenced in the letter. We looked at where in Spain he was born and then identified where Paris was (where he later lived). We talked about how Cubism differed from some of the other art we have looked at and then spent some time looking at some of Picasso’s work.
We then spent a little time on this video activity from Twinkl. I really liked this video as it explained a little about Picasso as well as offered an opportunity to try out two of his styles.
We really liked the effect of the blue and green drawings, although the boys decided the theme suited a ‘zombie’ self-portrait. I think it’s fair to say that all three of them struggled with the cubist style, but they gave it a good go.
We finished up by writing up a short fact file about Picasso with some key facts – Em even managed to write down all of (very long!) name. We are going to re-visit this again tomorrow and finish up with this activity video, again from Twinkl.
Collating our Work
As mentioned, we did quite a lot on different world artists during the covid lockdowns and we created a book where we stuck in the children’s art work and attempts to re-create work in the style of the chosen artist. We added Picasso into these books today. We have a world map at the front where we add a small passport size image of the artist in and note where they were born. We then add in a fact file about each artist as well as anything else the children have done.
