Firstly, we’re here to say that if you are fortunate enough to have a laundry room, then kudos to you! That’s an awesome thing to have in a house! Washing clothes and drying them is pure boredom in chore form, and the best way to make that more fun is to have a laundry room in the house.
A laundry room is the place you can keep all clean and dirty washing, the appliances that help you in your washing and drying and generally, a place where you can shut the door and pretend that the washing doesn’t exist! Laundry rooms are often equipped with washers, dryers, irons and more, and you need to know what you need so that you have a functioning laundry in the house.
- Storage. Not only do you need somewhere to keep all of your cleaning goods, you need adequate storage so that the laundry room isn’t a mess. You need somewhere to keep the manuals for each appliance, the Fisher and Paykel dryer parts to replace any that break and you need to have storage to make the space tidy. The laundry room is often a small one, and it doesn’t need to be overrun with dirty washing.
- Flooring. The laundry room shouldn’t be a concrete place to walk. It should have a finished floor so that if there are any leaks, you can ensure that the floor is easy to clean and you’re not looking at wet concrete or damp foundations for the house! It doesn’t have to be expensive, but it does need to be functional.
- Lighting. You have to have more than just one lightbulb lighting up the laundry. You need spotlighting and you need to make sure that the place you plan to iron your shirts is well-lit so you can see those creases. No one likes fluorescence, though, so try to stay away from that! Under-cabinet lighting also goes a long way!
- Counter Tops. You need to have space to fold the washing that you have dried. Counter tops don’t have to fill the space, but they do have to be clean and clear and ready to use.
- Appliances. What is a laundry room without a washer? Well, it’s just a room. Assess the space and work out whether you can fit both a washer and a dryer in the room, and then work out where you can put the iron and the board. You can use ironing boards that are mounted to the wall until you pull them down – they’re a genius invention. Do you need a washer with a hand wash bucket? Have a sink installed in the space, too, to scrub muddy boots!
The laundry room has to be a clean, organised space so that you can continue to use it safely and cleanly. Having a laundry room is exciting, so make sure that you are making proper use of the space. Keep the baskets in cupboards to clear the floor, too, and you’ll enjoy a beautiful addition to the house.
