Deciding What Holiday to Take When Pregnant: 5 Suggestions

This is a collaborative guest post

There’s nothing like a pre-baby holiday to help you relax and prepare for your new arrival.

But where do you go? And what do you do? Extra care has to be taken when you’re pregnant, so more adventurous trips have to be postponed for now.

Luckily, there are still plenty of options to choose from, and there’s something to suit everyone. Here are five suggestions for holidays you can enjoy while pregnant.

1. The beach trip

For sun, sand, and plenty of vitamin sea, nothing beats a trip to the beach. Lay back and enjoy the soothing sound of the ocean waves as they lap against the shore.

Holidaysafe’s pregnancy travel guide specifically recommends a trip to the coast because of the numerous health benefits. As well as heightened relaxation, the sea air is charged with negative ions, which increase our ability to absorb oxygen and make us more likely to unwind at night. Plus your vitamin D levels will be topped up with all the sunshine you’ll be enjoying (don’t forget your sun cream!)

The best beach destinations:

  • Santorini, Greece
  • Palma, Mallorca
  • The Algarve, Portugal

2. The city break

If you can’t get enough of culture and history, a city break is the choice for you. You may have to slow down your sightseeing but pregnancy doesn’t mean you have to avoid it completely — just take your time and listen to your body.

Pick your must-see sights to make sure you don’t miss anything, then see what else you can uncover as you make your way round. Be sure to pack comfortable shoes!

3. The countryside getaway

Whether you decide to explore another country or stay closer to home, a rural getaway offers a quiet escape from everyday life.

Stroll through beautiful, scenic countryside, enjoy hearty, local food and take the day at whatever pace you choose. For an extra treat, stay in a luxurious hotel and spend time curled up in front of the fire with a good book.

4. The spa holiday

Pregnancy is hard work — why not sit back and be waited on hand and foot? A spa holiday means all the pampering you deserve is right on your doorstep.

Any spa worth visiting will offer prenatal treatments specifically designed for the needs of pregnant women, whether that’s a massage, a facial, or a foot rub. Think about what you want and need, then check out Baby Centre’s article on visiting a spa during pregnancy to make sure you’ve got all bases covered.

The best spa holiday destinations:

  • The Lake District
  • Brittany, France
  • Tenerife

5. The staycation

The humble staycation is often overlooked, but don’t count it out. You’ll be able to explore your own country and feel all the benefits of a holiday without having to travel too far.

There might be an area of the country you’ve always wanted to visit, or a city you like the look of but haven’t explored yet. You might even decide to go back to a favourite destination and revisit much-loved places all over again. The choice is yours.
