Celebrating the Great Summer Stay-Cation

Ad

I think most of us know, 2021 will be the year of the Great British Summer stay-cation! I have a few tips for things to do when staying here in the UK for your summer break and making the most of the holidays.

Make sure you book ahead

I am sure we have all seen the news reports about increased prices for staying here in the UK, If you can make sure you book ahead or if not try and look for cancellation deals. There will be many people who, like us, have had to move holidays to other dates so places are limited. Do try places you might not ordinarily consider such as caravan and chalet parks. These can be a really fun base for exploring somewhere and can often be a little cheaper than booking a cottage or apartment.

Children love the novelty of staying in a caravan or even a tent so you can make it into a fun adventure. Remember to pack some casual clothes for when you’re putting the tent up – I like this grey loungewear co-ord set from FemmeLuxe.

Take a Capsule Wardrobe

You’ll likely be travelling by car which means there is a temptation to load the car up with everything and anything, but it still pays to take a capsule wardrobe. Look for versatile pieces that you can dress up for a night out or something more casual for a day strolling the beaches or the promenade. I love milkmaid tops for this; they’re perfect for dressing over a swimsuit or a bikini top or for wearing with jeans for a night out.

The arms are both cooling and practical for covering up against the UVA of the sun.

Plan for wet weather!

Remember that the UK is a bit unpredictable with the weather and that even a July or August time holiday doesn’t guarantee that the sun will be on your side! It’s worth packing board games and books for the rainy afternoons. It also makes sense to look for some local attractions which will work for those wetter days perhaps a swimming pool or somewhere with some relative shelter such as a castle or museum.

Loungewear is a must for days like this; getting comfy and going for a muddy stomp in local woodlands or playing games at home demands comfortable loungewear.

Embrace British Culture

The UK has so much to offer and we are a place with a lot of heritage and natural beauty. Keep an open mind as to your destination, a coastal break might seem like your first choice, but if you’re struggling to find the right location or accommodation then why not try a city break? There are some fantastic cities across the UK packed full of places to visit. You can use some of the major cities as a base for train journeys to smaller towns and places of interest or explore the cities themselves.

If you have children, maybe consider what they have been learning at school or what they will be covering next year and try to plan a visit linked to that. York makes a good visit for a Viking study or Chester makes a great visit for Roman studies. Many towns and cities have links to the Victorian era; all popular school topics. Getting hands-on with history is a superb way of helping children to consolidate their learning.

Visit the Natural World

The UK is packed full of superb outdoor spaces and making the most of these is a perfect way to spend the summer. Canals are great places to walk along and explore and there’s always plenty of woodland and places to walk. Look out for RSPB or National Trust spaces to explore whilst you are away.
