When I saw that this book, A Village Affair, was up for a blog tour I knew I wanted to be part of it! I’ve read books by this author, Julie Houston, before and really enjoyed them

What’s the Story about?

The story begins with Cassie who seems to have it all. She’s preparing for a night out with her husband and friends, but she’s unaware life is about to change. During the course of the evening, it’s very publicly announced that her husband is having an affair. With her best friend.

News travels fast in the small village and Cassie is devastated. It’s not as if she can hide as she soon finds out she’s been temporarily promoted to Head Teacher of the local primary school!

As Cassie come to terms with the betrayal and her promotion she finds herself locked in battles with others, from colleagues making her new job hard as well as those wanting to develop the local land, and of course the everyday trials at a school and as a parent.

Characters

There is a neat cast of characters in this book, and I like that it references characters from other stories. It’s nice to see how other characters have gone on in their fictional world. Cassie is likeable as are her friends. There are struggles all along the way and Cassie finds herself struggling against her mother and the local businessman who wants to build on lots of local land…. trying to use the promise of a new school building as a bribe. The bad guys are suitably bad enough

There’s a whole cast of characters who I felt a real empathy with early on and I found myself rooting for Cassie as she disappeared to Mexico to find herself.

What I loved

I loved the twists and intrigues in this book. Some of them are predictable (and of course that is half the fun!) but there are a few unexpected twists and turns along the way. I love that the good guys won in the end. It’s the perfect book to while away a winter evening and thoroughly enjoyable. Grab a coffee, sit back and enjoy!
