Pergolas… you either love them or you hate them, just like marmite. However, unlike marmite, which I terribly dislike, I’ve recently grown fond of pergolas. These are simple outdoor structures that provide shade and style, making any garden area standout, what’s there not to love?
Okay, I’m clearly biased, so let me step back a bit. Pergolas have both advantages and disadvantages. For instance, pergolas do offer shade but don’t really offer cover from the rain, which we get quite often here in the United Kingdom; wooden pergolas do look charming but also require kind of regular care. However, this refers to traditional pergolas and not modern pergolas. “What are modern pergolas?” you might be asking.
Modern pergolas are innovative versions of traditional pergolas that feature perfect balance of style, design and function – and yes, I love them! Designer Shade Solutions, retractable roof specialists in Ireland create bespoke modern pergolas for residential homes and commercial properties all across the country.
These pergolas are as stylish as their traditional counterparts but come with a lot more benefits! First and foremost, as these are bespoke pergolas, these can be built to your specific style and function requirements plus, offer protection from the elements, creating the perfect outdoor shelter to enjoy your garden space all-year-round.
Twin Mummy and Daddy comment that these pergolas “feature a retractable and tilting roof which gives you the flexibility to choose whether you want to fully enjoy the sun, simply want some shade or want the roof fully closed as a shelter from the elements.” Doesn’t it sound fabulous? Plus, these can be combined with side glass screens, heating and lighting to create the perfect indoor/outdoor room.

A pergola can be installed in many areas of your outdoor space. As this article on Houzz explains, it’s essential to “consider placing a pergola where it can best suit your needs.” Whether you want to define an outdoor dining area or attach it to one side of your property as an extension to your living area – a pergola can do both!
You Have to Laugh shared that if they were “going to add a pergola attached to my house, it would be practical in terms of walking from indoors to outdoors but then if I were to install a pergola as a freestanding structure in the middle of the garden, it would give my outdoor space an interesting focal point, perfect to welcome guests…” I think I would install a pergola attached to my house, creating a smooth flow from indoor living to outdoor living.
What do you think of modern pergolas?
