Even though summer hasn’t technically ended, it does feel like it doesn’t it? Grey clouds have taken over the skies, the days are getting shorter and the weather is starting to get cold again… Okay, let’s be honest, the weather never stopped being cold, maybe for a day or two but that was it. Rant over.
I do love Autumn, don’t get me wrong. Just wished we had had a longer (and warmer!) summer, that’s all. Now, that I’m almost mentally prepared for Autumn, I thought it would be important to get my home ready too as with Autumn comes more rain and chilly weather, so it’s essential to make sure the house is ready to keep us warm and cosy (and save on electricity bills!).
For this reason, I’ve partnered up with the Handy Squad, London handyman services, who are experts in the area. The team at the Handy Squad has been helping Londoners with any and all property-related services including plumbing, electrician, decorating, carpentry and more since 2005, so they know a thing or two about it all.
Seal windows and doors.
The team at the Handy Squad highly recommend draughtproofing your home before the chilly days arrive. This is important to do not only to ensure that you stay warm during the cold days but also to reduce heat loss. It’s a win-win! So, make sure to check any openings or cracks on your doors and windows, seal these and ta-da, no more chilly draughts!

Rearrange furniture.
Fizzy Peaches recommends rearranging furniture. In this article, Fizzy Peaches comments how she feels like “everything shrinks when the weather starts to get darker and colder” and the way to combat this is to rearrange furniture. If you arrange your furniture with size, shape and placement in mind, you can make any room feel bigger than it actually is.
Insulate the loft.
Did you know that around a quarter of heat in your house is lost through the roof? Time with Thea shared this and I had no idea! If your loft isn’t insulated properly, maybe it’s time to start thinking about getting it done to keep in the heat and save energy.
Deep clean.
“If you think that you should only have your annual deep spring clean, think again. Autumn is a great time to deep clean your home as well, getting it ready for winter.” says Lindy Loves and I couldn’t agree more. Plus, since we spend more time indoors during the cold months, it’s more than important to make your home look its best. You don’t want to be spending your days in a home that’s cluttered and dusty, do you?
Get into the season
I know that once I start to add autumn décor to my house, I’ll forget about my summer rant. Autumn colours, scents and decorations are actually some of my favourite (if not the most!). Warm tones, including deep reds, oranges and yellows, combined with autumn scents, such as cinnamon, pumpkin, apple and any woody scent, can really make any place feel more inviting and cosy. What’s there not to like?
