Determine its quality standards
If you are looking for a pre-school or even a new school, you will want to determine the school’s level of education, frameworks, and quality standards. The last thing you would want is to send your children to a school with poor educational frameworks and a lack of support. Evaluate its atmosphere
School visits are a good idea whether your child has special needs or not and schools should accommodate a request to visit. Things to look for when walking around are the quality of pupils’ work, which is often on display. Does the school display pupils’ work in a manner that says ‘we value and celebrate our pupils’ hard work’? Does the work cover a wide range of subjects or just writing and mathematics? This will give you an insight into whether the school values the wider curriculum or just focuses on getting pupils to pass tests in the core subjects. Bring your child with you when you visit the school to determine if it would be a good fit for them. Inspect the facilities, ask about the teachers’ qualifications, and get a feel for what kind of environment the school has. Find out what the daily schedule is and ask about parent involvement.
Decide on what type of education your child needs
There are many approaches to young child education. Depending on your and your children’s needs, the type of education you require will differ. You may have a child who thrives off of activity, whilst another may be better in an academic environment.
- Play-based programs are activities that aim to use play to develop skills. This is also known as “child-centered.” Many times these classrooms are broken up into different sections such as home or kitchen, science area, water table, reading space, and space with blocks and toys. This encourages students to gain skills through play.
- Academically focused programs are typically teacher-led and provide more structure. This is similar to a kindergarten setting and aimed at preparing a child for their next steps in school. This is also for parents who want more structure and fear the chaotic environment of play-based programs.
