If you want the holiday of a lifetime, then you should really consider getting out and about in a campervan. You will be able to travel along the roads less used, stop wherever and whenever the mood takes you. Travelling in this way offers you a sense of freedom that is difficult to come by in any other way. What’s more, the kids will love it. The world is open to you, and you can go exactly where you want. Here are a few tips for you budding campervan enthusiasts out there:
Get the right van
What do you want to do in your camper? The answer may seem obvious: er.. to travel, but really is it that simple? There are so many choices when it comes to campervan and motorhome, so think more in terms of would you be happy squashed up in a small VW camper, or do you want something with a bit more luxury? Toilets, showers, how much water do you need your camper to hold? Will you want to do a lot of off-roading? As well as road tripping? Then one of the hybrid campers may be your best bet. Think about the number of people, is it for you and your partner, or the whole family? Also, will you be buying one or renting one? Another aspect is that you need to be able to drive it, so automatic or manual? This is where size can come in to play if you are used to driving something small. It may be an idea to get your head down with your partner and do a bit of research and come up with a must-have list.
Plan the adventure
It is definitely worth your while having a rough plan in place. You are going to need to know where water fill-ups and toilet drop-offs are located. Do some research and find out where the best campsites are. If you join some clubs, you may be able to get discounts for stays. This can save you money and can give you a cheap place to enjoy the sun for a few days.
Go wild
You may want to plan the rough route, but take advantage of the freedom. Try not to stick to a schedule, and if you see a sign to a beauty spot 20 miles in another direction, go for it. In a campervan, you can stop and sleep anywhere, so make the most of it. It will be exciting and nerve-wracking at first, but over time it will become second nature.
Learning curve for the kids
Whether you are going to be travelling around the Lake District, or heading up to Scotland, if you are going as a family, it is a great way to teach the children about nature and the world. It is an opportunity to get close to them too, and to learn about them and their individual personalities. Take the advantage that this sort of freedom can offer you and create some lifelong memories.
