We teach children about the cosmos, how to cook rice and about the beautiful Christmas traditions around the world. Too soon to mention Christmas? This year, everything is upside down, so I don’t think it matters. Anyway… what about teaching them about practical things that they use every day? Door handles, door hinges, door knockers – what about teaching them about ironmongery?
Maybe it’s just me, my love for all things ironmongery or maybe it’s the fact that I think that we should appreciate the little things more than we do, no matter if it’s a small gesture or something in our home that helps us get on with our day. Do you think it’s silly? You know, if we didn’t have door hinges, we couldn’t properly operate doors. Small details, like door hinges, make our day easy but we don’t give them much thought because we are so used to them.
Not sure if I have too much free time in my hands or the fact that I’m a big Marie Kondo fan which has made me appreciate these little details of my home. Recently, I’ve started to give more thought to ironmongery – it’s not only practical but it’s also beautiful. Some ironmongery pieces are small works of art and I’ve been meaning to teach my children to appreciate them as much as I do.

Lever door handles are horizontal handles that you push downwards or upwards to open a door whilst door knobs, as this article on Houzz explains, “have a round opening and closing mechanism. This is one of the main differentiating factors between a door lever and a door knob.”

Ironmongery has an essential role in everyone’s day-to-day, from closing windows to operating doors – these wouldn’t be possible things to do without ironmongery. Plus, ironmongery can uplift the feel of your interiors or simply tie-in your décor.
When I’m walking around a new neighbourhood, I love to admire front doors and the different pieces of ironmongery people choose for their entrance – door knockers, door numbers and even letter plates. Am I the only one?
