Making the most of Half Term this Year

In collaboration with Hotels.com, but all views are my own

It’s hard at the moment to plan what to do and when to do it. The guidance about what we can and can’t do seems to change so it makes long term planning hard.

Here are my top tips for making the most of the half-term break, no matter where you’re located. Remember to check the latest guidance for your area. As with anything at the moment, it’s worth booking ahead for most days out to avoid disappointment and to enable venues to effectively manage the numbers of people coming through.

Make the most of the outdoors

Even if you’re in a high or very high area, you can still get outdoors and enjoy nature. There’s plenty to see and do. Take a walk along the canals or get in the woods. At this time of year, there is so much to see and spot. Just sitting quietly and listening to the birds is wonderful. We have been lucky to hear and spot woodpeckers on our recent walks and they are always a wonderful sight. This time of year is always great for children with plenty of muddy puddles to jump in as well as piles of leaves to kick around and explore.

Book a short, last-minute break

It’s well worth keeping an eye on out for last-minute deals. The Lake District is a particular favourite of mine and it’s a place where you can really get to grips with nature. Obviously you need to be mindful of restrictions in this part of the world, but it’s such a beautiful place. The town centres there are so wonderful and of course, the scenery is breathtaking in places. If you want to experience England’s beautiful landscape, the Lake District is the place.

Run with the season

Half term falls over Halloween so why not go pumpkin picking? There’s plenty of places to visit, including Brockhole on Windermere. It’s worth checking the availability of pumpkins before travelling, but even if they’re unavailable Windermere is, of course, well worth a visit. They usually have a Halloween themed event on that always looks good fun.

Enjoy the slower pace

It’s felt like a long few months but if you can, try to enjoy the slower pace of life. Enjoy a day out, or a short overnight stay if rules and guidelines allow for that. Enjoy seeing a bit of our own beautiful country and support local events where you can. The UK is a wonderful place to explore and if 2020 is the year of staycations, then I can’t think of anywhere more beautiful.
