Making Playdoh Aliens

Earlier in the week I set up this ‘invitation to create’ playdoh aliens. We have been enjoying the Aliens Love Underpants set of books so thought we would use that as the basis for our creations.

I got out a couple of tubs of playdoh, some coloured matchsticks, jewels, eyes and pipe cleaners and left them out for the children to play with.

I left a copy of one of the books up for the children to look at and Mr D told me which alien he was going to make. He was really quite taken with this activity and the children spent over an hour making their aliens. Miss E wasn’t really into making the aliens as such, she just enjoyed adding the various bits and pieces into the playdoh.

This is a lovely activity to extend the book with and also good for those fine motor skills. The children both really seem to enjoy playing with play doh and this was no exception. It is interesting for me to see how they’re developing their skills and able to manipulate the play doh more and more without my input.

We made three aliens (I made one and Mr D made two) and we had a chat about their similarities and differences – their colours, size, number of eyes and type of decoration used. This was good for Miss E to join in with too (despite not making her own alien!)

We will be doing this activity again in a few weeks when we do some more Aliens Love Underpants activities. I have been busy gathering ideas on my Pinterest board here so feel free to recommend pins for me.

  1. Lovely activity, Playdough is always so popular.
I had a foam craft kit that was basically just foam shapes and googly eyes that you stuck together to make aliens.and the boys loved it, you could easy make you own with foam sheets. X

  2. What fun!!! My toddler just caught me looking at this and said, “we can do that!” – love it! Thanks!
