As a parent, you have one of the best jobs in the world. However, it’s safe to say that you have to make sure that you’re approaching it in the right way. The good thing about this is that we’re all different. So what is right for one of us will be totally different for the next. It’s like home education – it’s not for everyone, and that’s okay. But one thing that we can all probably agree on is that we all want our children to grow up and become responsible adults. In order to do that, you actually have to teach your children about responsibilities. If you’d love to get started with that, here are five things you can do.
Give Them Chores
The first thing that you’re going to want to do, is think about dishing out chores to everyone. Now, this isn’t always something that kids love to do, but it definitely makes them more responsible and prepares them for adulthood. Not only that, but if you give them an allowance, it can show them that they need to be able to work for it. And, this can apply to a child of almost any age, because they can tidy up toys or mow the lawn!
Teach Them About Money
It’s important that children know the value of money. Yet, they won’t always know it themselves, they need to learn how to be good with money. So teach them. If you want them to avoid making mistakes with their finances when they are old, talk about money and show good money practices.
Get Them A Pet
Something else that you might find really helps them to learn and grow, is the idea of having a pet. Getting a pet isn’t everyone’s idea of the perfect life lesson, but it can really work. You could get them something small such as a rabbit, and they can learn how to care for it. Investing in indoor rabbits hutches could also make them easy to look after and keep clean. Being able to care for something else often makes children more responsible.
Make Them Earn What They Want
This point follows on from a few of the others above, but if your children want things in life, you might want to make them earn them. If they want a certain toy or to go on a trip, why not say they have to do a certain job or chore for X amount of time in order to earn it?
Get Them A Job
Finally, for your older children, it might be a good idea for you to encourage them to get a job. It’s okay to not want your teenagers to work because you want them to enjoy being a child and do well in school, but it can also help them to be more responsible. We all need to work to pay our way in life, and starting early can instil a good sense of what the value of money is in your children.
