2021 Monthly Plan & Review

Home Education Lately – July 2021

July seems to have absolutely flown by, and it feels like, home ed wise, this has been a good month for us. I feel like we have managed to achieve a fair bit this month and get a bit of balance back into our lives. I think it’s fair to say July has been a month of sport! From the football to the Olympics we have been thoroughly engrossed in it all!

Core Subjects

I have let the ‘core’ work drop a little this month. We have still dipped into maths and activity packs but I haven’t had the children doing these as regularly as we would do usually. We all need a slight change in direction and letting this ease a little was the right thing this month.

Project Work

Project work has been the big win this month. We had our speaking and listening group that had a focus of sport. Em chose gymnastics. H chose Harry Kane and D chose some winter Olympic sports. These were only very short studies that we fit in around an Olympics project we did at the end of June.

Our main focus this month has been a project on Japan. I had decided we would learn about Japan and tie it in with the Olympics study and then I saw that Twinkl was doing a ‘virtual tour’ so I used that as a frame for our study. We have just about finished this up and did present some of it to a friend online and to some more friends at a small geography fair, another HE family had organised.

We have really enjoyed this project and doing some hands-on crafts and heading into Manchester to visit a Japanese-themed shop. I shared some of the bits we have been doing over on Instagram. There’s still an activity of two to finish this one up yet, but I think it’s been a project that all three children, and me, have enjoyed.

Regular Groups

Beavers and Cubs for the older two have continued and both had face to face meetings which was great. Spanish classes continued and have now finished for the summer. I need to look into a class for H, which we might do from September for him.

Days Out

The month started with Damian having some annual leave from work so we managed a short weekend away in North Wales then some lovely days out including fruit picking at a local fruit farm and a journey over to Wepre Park where the children had a great time exploring the castle ruins. It was nice to have the time together and the leave fell with the end of the Euro’s so we enjoyed that, although the final would have been better if the result went our way! The children thoroughly enjoyed the Euro’s and we enjoyed a traditional ‘English’ afternoon tea on final day which the children loved.

We have also had days out with friends including a butterfly count at a National Trust site and a fabulous day out to Gullivers World which was the highlight of the month for the children. We also did the Stockport Frog trail last weekend which was a lot of fun. It was great to travel to parts of the town we haven’t been to for a while and to see the development that is taking place.

Other Bits and Pieces

July has mostly been about enjoying the better weather and enjoying the summer of sport. We have watched a lot of the Olympics and learned about the sports and the athletes that are competing and I think we will continue to enjoy this into August. We have a short break planned in work before moving onto a short project before hitting the ground in September and moving things up a gear with the older two.
